Took an eastern wild turkey this past Saturday with my Winchester Super X2 NWTF 3.5 in. mag 12 ga. at 17 yards. Been after them all week and settled for this fellow. Just a jake but it was crunch time. Should eat pretty good. For the full story check out timber's forum at this link: http://www.handloadersbench.com/forum15/474.html Edited by The_Mountaineer |

Congratulations Mountaineer...good work. I read your story on the other site. a whole week of hunting ...wonderful. In PA the season has been open one week, I made 6 mornings (we can't hunt on Sunday and not any day after 12 noon). I hope you were safe on operating that tractor after those early morning rising. I'm no longer into dairy farming and morning milkings, and those 3 AM get ups take their toll on me. Don't fall asleep cutting brush on the John Deer! Nice bird. How many can you shoot in WV?????? Guess I forgot to say, in PA we only get one bearded birb all season, and mine is still flying. I have a 12 guage pump in the car, but have been using archery. If I don't get one in the next 2 weeks, 12 guage here I come. BEAR |

Thanks BEAR, We're allowed two bearded turkeys in the spring. This will be my first for this year. Gotta save one tag for a good bird I'm hoping. Hope the birds are doing a little better up your way. They've been kinda finicky around our stomping grounds. Best tactic has been to intercept them where they'd normally be anyway (always a good bet but too many folks rely on calling). Heck, I called maybe 5-10 yelps an hour, nothing else when I took this bird. My general rule is call as the turkeys do. Lots of gobbling, lots of calling. Little gobbling, little calling. JMO. Good luck to ya! |

Birds have been very disturbed. Some days all you hear are gobblers all morning long. Other days nothing???? In PA you can only legally hunt by calling. Stalking gobblers that are calling is illegal. You can't stalk up to a gobbler and set up 150 yards. Actually the decoys are very important in the way I hunt. The birds will often just 'show up' in the decoys without any gobble back on the call. Maybe we killed off all the vocal toms in past years, I don't know. But we seem to get less vocal birds every year for the last 10???? Two birds...I'm envious BEAR |

Well, I gave one wing to a buddy of mine for a "fly down flapper" and the other I turned into a wingbone call or I should say "turning" into a wingbone call. Otherwise, I usually just toss them.
