Fella's;
This afternoon I stopped in at the local Barnes & Noble, Great Falls MT. While in there, I noticed a young man with a high & tight, T-shirt, jeans, & an open carry glock on his hip. He was sitting on a bench, reading & minding his own business.
I was also carrying, but concealed. I didn't ask him what he was doing, didn't see the need. But, I don't think that Montana, or at least Great Falls, allows open carry in the city.
What would you have done, presuming that you're not LEO.

I'd have left the store.
A lot of sick minds have a need to show high capacity autos. I don't know if it is a hormone or inadequate immotional thing. On occasion someone will know I'm into guns and whip out a loaded 45 or Glock and say what do you thing of this in public places. It is more of a "show" thing than an opinion. I try to avoid people with these 'problem' mind sets.
Even if open carry is legal, the store manage could have and should have asked him to leave. This really gives gun ownership a bad name.

Wow, this is a totally foreign concept to me... 'course I'm in a country where the only 'open carry' are LEO's, military police or specially licenced armed guards, like on an armoured truck, etc. No civilian 'open carry' except on an approved range for target practice.
'Concealed carry' is even more restricted than that...

Unless he gave me a reason to believe otherwise, thru his actions/looks/my gut instinct, I would assume it was HIS business he was carrying openly, and would carry on with mine. Of course, I would be armed, too, but he wouldn't know.

Could have been an off duty cop. Eiether way, why should it bother someone. I think nothing of seeing someone carry open, rather than concealed. Most western cities, it's still legal.Cops might stop you and ask some questions, but there is nothing they can do. Which is the way I figure it should be.

I see that here from time to time. I guess living in ranching country I have never given it much thought. I guess it is about like seeing a rifle in the back window of a pickup. I see that at least once a week. The only thing that bothers me about the rifle in the back window is, its not uncomon to see one in Walmart's parking lot with the windows down and nobody around. I would be afraid someone might steal it.

I see the same thing from time to time. Here at gunshows, the vendors carry open on their hip, that is, after the security fellows make sure that they're unloaded. They think it makes them look knowledgable I guess. Here a few years ago, a vendor was demonstrating how to draw out of a shoulder rig with a P226 SIG. He drew it and blasted a hole in the building. At least the AD went into the corner of the ceiling and wall. It took them 5 minutes to haul him and his wares OUT with a warning, not to return. Open carry isn't a problem with me, unless the guy is toying with it in the holster. Then it becomes my business to tell him to desist. I carry open from time to time, but it is mostly when I am in a hunting situation, or at an IPSC match. Anyway, as long as they don't cause any problems, I won't give them one..................Kingpin

Fella's;
I talked with a Deputy about what I saw on Sunday. This was a call I made to the Sheriff's office, recorded official & everything. I was told that a concealed carry permited person can carry openly anywhere except the usual places, like where alchohol is consumed, banks, & schools.
I about had to pick my jaw up off the floor. A permit to carry concealed allows you to carry openly. Huh!!?? Oh, well, I just live here.

That was kind of a confused answer he gave you. It is legal to carry openly in Montana, even without the CWP, and many other states. Those without reciprocal carry laws usually have the open carry law, and I sometimes carry like this when travelling. Where you get in trouble in another state, is if you have it in the glove compartment, or under the seat. Traveling in a pickup, I don't have a lot of other choices. So it stays on the belt.
Open carry is rather common in this area, and I see one or two a week packing openly. Never have heard of any of them causing any trouble whatsoever. Some towns may have local ordinances, but doubt if they could make them stick in court if you wanted to follow through.

CB,
Same rules apply in NY (upstate)... I still have my CC from when I was in the military (I applied and got it while stationed in Rome NY).
Anywho, they told me the same, open was OK however if not in uniform it only drives concerns, and it should not be done open in Banks, resturants, bars, schools, and stores. Same speach, I got tired of carryin' after a few years, that blue steel gets heavy (S&W).
Anyway... It's a requirement if certain agencies to carry ALL the time... But yer local county mountie typically doesn't have to put up with this like the fed's do. But ya never know, there are enough wild eye'd pistol waver's in MT anywho.

Off duty carry is a requirment for SAPD and the County here. IMO, any sworn LEO who doesn't carry 24/7 is an optimistic idiot.

Fella's;
I knew that open carry was legal in Montana in general. However, I still am under the impression that it is not legal for the general public to open carry in the city of Great Falls. The exception to the carry ban in Great Falls, as I understand it, is to have a concealed carry permit. With the permit, a person can carry either open or concealed.
I would have thought that the intent of the concealed carry exception was to prevent prosecution for an inadvertant flash of a gun, not naked, on-the-hip for the world to see carry.
Anyway, I'm not about to start open carry unless & until I'm out of town. Most of the time when hiking, I carry concealed anyway. When one meets a Kali soccer mom & family on the trail, open carry just isn't worth it. I mean, even if she's got big hooters & takes a deep breath, the following indignent screaming is just too much.

Nice to live in a state with a pre-emption law. No municipality can enact a stature more strigent than state law. State law requires concealment, local ordinances cannot change it. Makes life easier, no local anti-gun town gets the opertunity to hammer you thru lack of knowledge.
I could carry openly while hunting, or "engaged in other lawful activity". Concealed is a tactical advantage, IMO.
It HAS BEEN and IS legal in Texas to carry a long gun openly, anywhere. Anti-gun folks used that law to try to quash concealed carry, saying it wasn't needed. Maybe legal, but that is not to say you wouldn't be stopped and questioned every ten feet by every LEO you happened to meet. I carried a shotgun across downtown SA once, after not being able to find close by parking at a gun show. The looks the bunny people give you are priceless...
