I'm an Easterner. If I wanted to go out west for about 5 days what state would be the best to shoot coyotes. I can call and have an electronic caller. I'd be looking for the most opportunities, maybe also places with public lands or friendly ranchers. I don't mind paying a rancher to stay on his property, or buying a few bottles of 'olde stump blower' for the previlege?

There's here. I've got land and coyotes. Money not needed for the priviledge. Stump-blower usually not turned down. Here, is the Great Falls area of Montana.

Thanks guys. I'm going to start planning.
BC, I like wolves, usually mounted or just tanned. I've only seen them in Alaska, out of range and moving farther at a rapid rate, and in Yellowstone moving fast and illegal to even kick dirty at.
I thought that the wolf and coyotes ranges didn't overlap too much, both being predators? Also thought the 'otes were maybe more effective hunters of mice and ground squirrels?

I'm off in search of Wiell E Coyote! I had a bunsh of things to get dunn first I'm realy late.But I'll get some late day hunting in . I think most of the hunting will be out ove the window, drive buy sniping. It's still very cold to be sitting very much, well here goes!

I'm using my main gun MOAG (mother of all guns) 4570. This is a resent purtches I've been working with for two years. I've worked up a good hot load for it.It's a marlin 26" cowboy. The load that I've come up with is a hornidy 300 hp,59gr H4198,cci 200 primers federal cases. I have checked them at 2395fpc avrage, I have a bushnell 3/9 scope on it, and a nice braded leather sling.The magizen goes all the way to the end of the barral,it holds 10 shells.I had to get 410 shotgun barrel bands for the sling. This load is very hot compaired to factory loads(1250fps),I've also invested in a GOOD recoil sholder pad. Any way We got 3 coyotes the other day two with MOAG and one with my boys 7mm mag, no money for fiur that day but now there is three less 'otes!!!

BK,Yep thats his real color.He`s a Texas yote. I shot him with my Model10 Savage Tactical, 308 Win in the pic, and a 150 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.I know,its a bit of overkill but he didnt know the difference.I called him up in an old gravel pit.He ran up on an pile of dirt looking for a dying cottontail and sat down on his ass.To his dismay,the last thing he ever saw was a flash from 200 yards away.

I've gone with the 6mm Remington. But if I had to make the choice you've given, I'd probably go with the .223. Not because I think it's the better of the two specifically for coyotes, but because it's the better all-round .22 centerfire.
It's cheaper to shoot, doesn't burn barrels nearly as fast, and off-the-shelf ammo is easier to find. Besides, most shots at coyotes are under 300 yards, no problem for the .223. Provided the proper bullet is used, it should be entirely adequate in humanely putting them down.

I have a Weatherby in .223 Remington.I generally shoot a 40Grain Hornady Moly coated V-Max bullet in it for yotes.The one in the pic was just an unlucky field trial for that particular load in my .308 .
I like the 22-250 for its velocity ,but I am a beleiver in the.223 Remington round.It is more than plenty of wallop for varmints.My only other real choice for coyotes is the 220 Swift.

Fella's;
I've got a .220 Swift, but it's a Ruger #1V, with the bull barrel. I use Hornady 50 grain V-Max's in it that have a muzzle velocity of 3960 fps. Yes, it'll do coyotes. But I got tired of lugging it around. So when the deal on the 6mm came up, I grabbed it.
The 6mm's on a Remington 788 & both the stock & barrel have been cut down. The stock wasn't shortened too much, but the barrel was cut back quite a bit. It's now 18 inches. Consequently, velocity is somewhat limited. But the load tends to compensate for that. I'm using the Hornady 75 grain moly V-Max at 3050 & getting outstanding accuracy.

CB, I have a buddy who has an old 244 Remington. I think its a 788 not sure though.It is plenty accurate with the handloads he uses.I had a Ruger M77 heavy barrel in 220Swift, superb rifle no complaints.I ended up swapping it for another rifle(Wish I`d kept it).
I am working on swapping my dad in law out a of a Ruger M77 heavy barrel in 25-06.
Kind of off topic, but any Winchester Model 70 fans here?I have a Model 70 in 300Win Mag , made the same year I was born.It is in the top three of the favorite rifles I own.Heres a pic of it with a Leupold VariX II on it.
