It has been 60 years since I owned a 1911 auto. It was a US&S military. At that time in my shooting career, I couldn't hand it with ball ammo in comp. sorry now, that I sold it.
LCS has new Charles Daly 45 1911 clone for $399. They look really good, as a standard 1911, not dolled up. they are Italian made by Brixia. My plastic thinks I should take a dip in the pool. With biden- inflation, doubt I'll ever get into a 1911 any cheaper. thoughts? quality? Edited by BEAR - 15 December 2022 at 12:32 |

What would you want the 1911 in?
I'm guessing 45 acp. The boy has a Springfield arms 1911 45 auto. Wonderful gun. He loads his with 45 super loads. Like a +p+p+p load. Had to change springs and I think the Firing pin and different brass. My 10 mm is a Rock Island 1911. By all means get a nice one...

IF I get one it would be 45 ACP, plenty powerful, especially as we can't hunt with them. I have 3 more powerful handguns to hunt with; 30 Herret, 44 mag, 375 w, and a long barreled 357 mag.
It would be just a plinker, and a toy. 45 acp would be traditional.

I highly recommend getting a 1911. I don't know much about the Charles Daly but I would think the design has been proven by now that any of them would be good quality. I do recommend getting one with the extended beaver tail. I grip mine high without worrying about getting bit.
For competition I shoot mid range loads of 3.7 grains of Clays and a 230 grain round nose powder coated lead bullet. They cycle good and make major power factor with relatively light recoil. All of my other loads are 5 grains of Bullseye with either a 230 grain lead round nose or 230 grain Hornady XTP. They have a little more recoil but are not bad at all. It is my opinion that every gun collection should have at least one 1911 and at least one Ruger .22 pistol.

My load for the Bullseye game for the .45acp is/was (not shot the game since moving north in 2015) The correct load is 4.5gr BULLSEYE powder with 230gr semiwadcutter cast boolet. Semiwadcutter so it cut nice clean holes for scoring the targets. My plinking load is the same as bullseye load. Difference was I used match grade brass for the target game & any brass for the plinking stuff. Social work requires factory fodder. Everybody has their own flavor" for social work. for the record bear I didn't even breath any of the WWII air!error in powder has been changed. 12-30-22

REGARDING Bear's original query about the 1911 pistol. It is a great pistol and fun to shoot and handle. I agree with Wing....Bear! GET ONE.!! Your intended use will dictate the quality you might want but I'd say to get a better one vs low end. Quality is pretty much standard nowadays tho with the modern manufacturing methods used by the gun makers it might be hard to find a "bad" 1911. Some are just better than others for many reasons. One thing is to buy GOOD/QUALITY magazines...not the place to scrimp. Adjustable sights would be a good choice & you can even mount an optic on one if you choose. One of my 1911's has a red-dot mounted on it....I needed it to compete with the younger "eyes" who can still see the open sights! For a carry piece I have a good quality iron sight set, not the military type which were very small on both ends. The 1911 that has the Colt ACE .22LR conversion unit installed has the non adjustable rear sight with corresponding front sight. My most used 1911 is a Springfield Armory but at some point before my time it had a Colt bbl installed. It now has all new springs & trigger work (stoning/polishing), a really fun gun to shoot. I did have a "roller" trigger installed in my Bullseye gun at Camp Perry a few yrs back hoping it would help improve my shooting. Remember, Bullseye shooting is a timed game at each target & is one handed from 50ft and 50yds. Trigger control is important there. Nearly all of my 1911 shooting has been with cast boolets & lately I have tried plated boolets too for the non social shooting. Social work for the 1911 (and any pistol) has I have said requires good quality factory boolets designed for that type of target! Being LH I have installed a right side safety lever on all my 1911's. Some new 1911's come standard with both safety levers. Let us know what you decide to do bear. |

I might try loading some with Unique. I'm almost out of Bullseye and haven't seen any in stores in a long time. I have a bunch of Unique.

ALERT: Please make Note of the wording in RED above in previous post. I made a mistake in stating I used UNIQUE for a load in the .45acp cartridge for a 1911 gun. CORRECTION: The correct load is 4.5gr BULLSEYE powder. My apologies to all for that inaccurate statement. IBD

Wingmaster......Check the correction I posted here today regarding my powder choice for the .45acp load. Unique is NOT the powder I use for my 1911 .45acp target loads. The powder I use is BULLSEYE @ 4.5gr w/200gr SWC cast boolet. I apologize for the mistake. IBD

For the record I do also use UNIQUE POWDER. Primarily I use Unique in my .45 Colt loads for cowboy action type competitions in my (clones) SAA Revolvers & the '66 & '73 Rifles. Bullet of choice is a cast lead boolet of 250gr. & a powder charge to replicate the old BP velocity of about 850fps. No wimpy "gamer" loads or tricked out guns for me like most SASS shooters use nowadays. To keep this post inline with the topic 1911 .45acp pistols there is a separate category in the cowboy action game called "The Wild Bunch" which allows 1911's & long guns (rifles, shotguns) germane to that time frame around either side of 1900. Think of the movie "The Wild Bunch" to give you an idea of the firearms of that era.

Thanks for the correction IBD.
Has anyone seen any Bullseye on store shelves lately? I haven't seen any in at least a year.

I’ve shot 1911s since forever. Loaded all those powders and they do well enough. WW231 is also a good one. HOWEVER, I’d you want to really complete in bullseye shooting, I’d suggest using VV n310. I’d shoots cleaner, less recoil for the velocity. I use it exclusively with a 200gr cast SWC. The n320 is a fine SD powder with a low flash also, but you will need to dig for load data. The n310 is used in an old USMC bullseye team road that was specified in online places including the Wilson Combat website.
