Do you have any thoughts on a 6mm ARC?

I was scrolling through Buds Gun Shop and saw a Howa Mini action with a walnut stock in 6mm ARC. I got to reading about the cartridge and it looks kinda interesting. You can get close to .243 speeds and for some reason I like the idea of a mini action. Any thoughts?

They also make the same gun chambered in 7.62X39. I like the idea of shooting cheap steel cased ammo but question the accuracy of cheap ammo and think I would probably end up reloading for it eventually. If you were going to get one or the other witch one would you get?

They also make the same gun in 6.5 Grendel.
The Grendel is amazing, the GD and Bear at time use that gun also.
We are just working on the same gun only with a 22" barrel for our night hunting thermal/night vision suppressed coyote gun. But with all that said if the 6 arc was available when we got them we would have gone with the 6. We have an AR in the 6 arc and it is everything a 243 wanted to be but wasn't. Less powder same speed and able to run the new LONG bullets. It can't meet the speeds of my 6mm REM but my rem can't shoot the long bullets without a barrel change and way faster twist. You will not be disappointed with the Howa mini in 6 arc.ClapBig smile

In Virginia for a week.

Thoughts:  the 6mm ARC is designed for the AR  15 platform, and long bullets (extended range/BC).

so it depends upon what your needs/wants are.  Certainly it is a good choice for the AR platform.  Why?  well all AR platforms are limited to about 52000 pressure (weakness of gas operation).  So you would get better performance out of a reload in a bolt gun; but if shooting factory will be limited.

Because the ^ ARC is designed for long bullets to get a better trajectory at 500 yards, you will be limited by the twist rate for shooting 75, 80, 85 grain bullet often preferred with the 6mm especially for varmint shooting.

what use would you want?  If just informal target at 200 yards or less the 7.65x39 (aka 30 Russian might be a better choice, as cheap ammo.  and available everywhere.  6 ARC might be difficult to find in way-out WY.

I'd preferr a .22 in that rifle.  222, 223, 220 Rusian.

what is you use???

I really don't have a use for it. I just saw it and thought I needed one.

I think if I were to get one the main use would be prairie dogs and once in a while a coyote.

How available is brass for the ARC? I'm pretty sure if I got the 7.62X39 I wouldn't be happy with the accuracy of cheap steel cased ammo and would reload for it. I just as well load for a 6-ARC. It would be quite a bit faster and with the long bullets I think you could reach out and touch targets a lot farther away.

Spent a few days hunting PDs in ND with my bro'.
He was using a 22-250 and I was shooting a 243, both target rifles.
Range was 300 to 800 yards.  winds 15-20 mph  crosswind.

His 22 cal was useless at that range.  I was hitting 1 out of 3 shots at 600 yds with a 75 grain bullet.

That's one thing about the ARC that caught my attention. It can get a little windy at times.

Any time I start loading for a new to me cartridge I start with a heavy bullet. Usually the heaviest I can find for the cartridge. I think it helps buck the wind and carries more energy at long ranges.

And, I don't mind shooting a prairie dog with a 200 grain bullet out of a 30-06 if that's the rifle I have in my hand at the time.

I'm the same way, when I had an 06 I shot 110 bullets" 3500fps"

I just picked up a savage axis in 6.5 needmoor but I think I'll change it to a 338 federal or something.

I like the 338 federal.  Just a 308 opened up to .338.

Accurate.  I reload for it, but some folks think it kicks too much with 220 gr bullets.\

Nice black bear cartridge and elk within 250 yds.

OPPS I forgot the boy has two 338 fed, an ar and a bolt, out stanting.
After a bit of brain storming we came up with a 358 Winchester.
YUP a 308 necked up to 35 caliber.
Maybe shoot a 198 Hammer tipped. Clap

Nothing wrong with the 358 Win.  Really to big for deer; great for black bear and elk up close.

Winchester made the 358 to replace the 348 W.  The 348 was a popular Alaskan rifle in the Winchester model 71; their biggest and strongest lever rifle, but expensive to make.  So a rimless 358 came out with the Winchester model 88 lever gun.

go for it.

I don't know why but I never have been impressed by the 6.5 Needmoor. I bought one for my granddaughter and she has shot a couple antelope and an elk with it but I think there is a lot better out there.

I'd say either one would be a great choice. If nothing else you could use it for a gopher gun. LOLLOL

Oh, I almost forgot. My current truck gun is a Savage Axis in .223.

I spent quite a bit of time working up a load for it and got a bunch of new Starline brass to help keep it consistant and it shoots really good. I'm gust going from memory but I think it shoots right at 3/4 inch at 100 yards. I bet yours will be a shooter.

Savage makes some real shooters.  Not always the finest fit and finish.

My truck gun is the only Savage I have besides a couple old Savage Stevens shotguns that the fit and finish is pretty good.

The truck gun on the other hand isn't so good. The cheap plastic stock is so flimsy that I can easily move it back and forth in the barrel channel area. The trigger was stiff and not crisp. I cut a couple coils off of the trigger spring and at least lightened it up to 3 pounds.

But it does shoot good

we have about 5 in the family, beginners deer rifles.  All low cost, all shoot minute of deer.  they are either 243 or 308.
