Fella's;
I attended the Montana Weapons Collectors Society meeting last night & got the dates for the 2017 gun shows. As we always have MYGAWDS coincide with the Great Falls spring gun show, I can now post the dates of the events. MYGAWDS 2017 April 28, 29, 30, Fri, Sat, Sunday. Please make your plans accordingly. 900F |

Hey guys,
I'm looking at my work commitments for that week, and see I am on tap for that week. Will try to find someone to swap with me. Sooo, how many rounds are considered sufficient for a decent hunt? |

90-160 yards is the sweet spot.
You can initially walk into a throng of them danger close < 1 yard but they won't stay around long once the firing commences. At 90+ the noise doesn't seem to bother them as much. While shots can and will be taken over 160 the odds go down pretty quick. It's nice when the soil is dry. You get a little puff of dust to use to adjust your windage and elevation. Much more difficult if you don't have that feedback. DD Edited by deaddog |

YUP A foot of snow just does not let you see where your shooting at all. But sometimes the wind is so strong you don't see the dust till it slows down 50 yards to the EAST. Edited by d4570 |

Goatlocker;
I've literally looked down between my feet, just after taking a shot, & seen a gopher head in the hole I was straddling. The "yardage" may have been as high as one foot, maybe less! OTOH, anything out to a range you have the ammo to try for. In my mind, past 200 yards you're into artillery area suppression, but there have been successes out there. Those guys always seem to disremember the number of shots it took to get the hit though. I'll say prepare for 50 to 150 yards. Also prepare for any kind of weather, I'm not kidding. It can go from a blinding snowstorm to 80 degrees f over the weekend. 900F |

For me the range is 20-100 yards. Sure I shoot at
some over 100 yards, but that is ONLY, when after 5 minutes, I can't see any closed. Weather...there is no standard except very windy to tornado. The little fellows really don't like wind. pray for a sunny day with 5 mph wind (that never happens). We have had more than one day at MYGAWDS with snow! Thought, take your rifle in a double case, then you can seriously shop at the gun shoe. Also IIRC MT has no sales tax, so even if you shop at Sheels the out- the-door price is going to be 5-7% less. |

,
Been to a couple of them past years....met some neat gun folks at them too. Like Jimmy Clark, the Louisiana gunsmith (father-in-law to Jerry Miculik) Bill Jordan the border patrol guy, the "Gunny", H. Joquin Jackson, Texas Ranger & NRA board member, Ted Nugent, NRA board member & had him sign his book, the publisher of "Soldier of "Fortune' magazine & he autographed a copy of his mag that has my sons picture in it, Craig Boddington, Had Gen Tommy Franks autograph his book to my son who served under his command in Iraq. The Gen was main speaker in 2006 convention in Milwaukee, WI. Wayne LaPerrie, NRA guy, autographed his book for me many more gun notables but names escape me now, like the South Dakota Gov, MOH Marine flyer WWII, NRA guy etc., he autographed my book of his too back in 1993. The NRA convention is a neat deal for sure. |

My son had an I-pod for music, but I doubt it would help me shoot critters any better then a good sling and proper breathing technique.

Fella's;
A small correction about Joe Foss. He was based out of Henderson Field, Guadalcanal & they were flying F4F-4's in the Cactus Air Force. My dad, on Guadalcanal from day one, was an aircraft mechanic there. 900F |

He didn't meet Joe Foss on Guadalcanal, but did meet him later in life. In the 50's Joe was governor of South Dakota, or as it's sometimes referred to - SoDakia. (And then there's NoDakia, but we won't ruin this thread by talking about "them"!) We lived in Aberdeen S. Dakota & I know my dad met him then. Just as a side note, in that same time frame, I know I flew as a passenger on a C-47/DC-3, twice. Once on the C-47 & once on a DC-3. Anybody else ever been on one? 900F Edited by CB900F |
