Topic: 45 ACP Loading Question Posted: 07 December 2003 at 03:05 |

Using a standard 230 gr. FMJ bullet what is your proven load using Bullseye or Unique powder? Nothing fancy, just looking for standard velocity and what works for you. I'm leaning toward 5 grs. of Bullseye at this time as I have plenty but also have nearly as much Unique. Thanks.

LAH - Welcome to the BSB...
I've been loading and shooting the .45ACP for years. My pet load is 5.2 grains of Red Dot behind a 200 gr lead SWC bullet... however, I have loaded some 230 grain FMJ on occasion...
6.0 grains of Winchester 231. [~ 850 fps].
6.7 grains of Unique. [~850 fps].
6.5 grains of Winchester 473AA. [~850 fps]. - this powder no longer made.
According to the Lyman #47 loading manual you should be good with 5.0 grains of Bullseye [should give you about ~ 850 fps] as the max load is 5.3 grains for ~ 878 fps.
As for Unique, the Lyman #47 says max load for Unique is 6.8 grains ~ 916 fps.
Start well under and work up!
What pistol are you loading for?

Regards, Marcus.

Not sure what they will be shot in. I sold my 1911 parts gun a year or two ago and I use a friends Thompson 1911A1 for a test gun. The loads will be sold. I normally load 231 but have a bit of Bullseye to rid myself of so thought I'd ask everyone I know for their findings.
I've come into some 230 FMJ bullets also. I'm a sixgunner and only shoot the self loaders when there's a need. Been loading Bullseye for a while and feel a load of 5 grs. to be about right. It never hurts to ask though.

I've standardized on 5.0 grains of 700X for the 230 in the .45ACP. That's also the charge that I use for 125gr copper-washed lead in my .357's. It's nice to have one powder measure do the work of two. It's very clean-burning by the way.

I started out using flammable dirt in most of my handguns, and it is still my favorite handgun powder. It doesn't do anything great, but does a whole bunch of stuff pretty well. Alliance got around to cleaning it up a while back, and it does burn a bit cleaner now.

I buy Bullseye by the 8lb keg, and load and shoot about 5,000 rounds of .45 ACP a year (and about that much .38 Special.)
My load is 5.0 grains of Bullseye behind a 230 grain cast bullet. While I buy cast bullets when I can, most of my loads use the Lee 230 grain tumble lube bullet (I have a 6-cavity mould), lubed with liquid Alox. I generally cast these bullets from straight wheel weights, and they shoot quite well.
Admittedly, I'm a cheap SOB who likes to shoot a lot.

LAH, I once owned a Thompson 1911 in the early 90's, and I wouldn't take another one if it was given to me. Actually, the one that I had, was given to me. I shot the recoil spring into a knot, got bit with the hammer, and had enough stoppages to write a book. If you are going to try loads, do it with a Colt's Caspian, or a Springfield. I fear that all you will get with a Thompson is heart aches. Nothing derrogatory about the Thompson, know a couple of guys who "shoot" one regularly, but when it shits the bed, I get to work on it. If you have a gunsmith, you can bet that he is your good friend...............Kingpin

This one belongs to a friend. We've not shot it a lot but no problems yet.
