Any advice for a first-time turkey hunter? The timeslot I
put in for and received was may second through sixth. I've got a couple decoys, a mouth call, a slate call, and a box call. I have been watching YouTube videos on how to use those calls, and decoys set up. I have been wanting to Turkey hunt for many years. They just recently expanded the zone into where I hunt. I had lots of turkey activity on my trail camera last summer. As soon as things thaw out I am going to put the camera back up and see what's moving where I will be hunting. Bill |

Just my technique.
i find where there are turkeys at least a week before opening day And then try to go out before the season at day break and call, just to find the roost area. I don't go anywhere near it just get a really good bearing to the roost tree(s). Sometime there might be 2 or three roost close by. the day before the season, at 1pm I go to the area of the roost and quietly put up a small ground blind with perfect camo cover and clean an area for my folding chair. And I clean any obstructions for some shooting lanes. The decoys stakes are usually 15-25 yards away from my chair, in the direction of the roost. I set my decoy stakes and my chair up. My blind area is about 75 yards from the roost are; closer and you will spook birds. Opening day I go into my area without a light and quiet. Get set up, putting my 3 decoys (2 hens, 1 jake) onto the sticks and settle down to wait for sun up. At first full light I give three hen calls, and wait.I repeat this every 7 minutes, or after I hear a turkey call. i have a number of different calls and vary the calls also. The Toms will go crazy when they hear the hen calls...But they might not fly down immediately. I use my binoculars and usually see the turkey high in an oak, maple or pine tree about 75-100 yards off. I usually hear them fly down, they mostly come down as a group. I call long and hard after the fist bird or two come down. Even if hens I want them to walk to me. As they come i give a sparse slight cluck cluck from time to time (this is the time you can over call). I will then usually get gobbles back. i answer gobbles but again don't over call). As soon as I see a white head...Bang. then carry bird back to SUV. Just the way I do it. most years i get on on opening day. Some times the birds will not be there; they chose another roost. But I usually have two or more roosts and will get a tom the first week. I'm too old to get up early, hunt all day and then go out the next morning. So I hunt only mornings; and have breakfast at 10:30am on the way home for an early bed. |
