My old hunting partner Iris is not doing well. If you remember, about a year ago the vet found a couple spots on her lungs and she has a couple of lumps on her belly and hip.

In the last couple of days she has gone down hill. She has trouble walking. Even a few steps takes alot of time. I have been helping her get up but I don't think she could get up by her self. Its not looking good.

I am going to call the vet in the morning. Since she is 15 years old, I am trying to prepare myself for the doc to suggest that it is her time. I realize it is time to put her down, but am having a hell of a time admitting it.

Thanks for listening

Wing master

Hey Wing Master.......I know where you are coming from....it is real tuff to let go of your friend....15yrs is a LONG time....whats best for the dog is what's best....you will know when to make the call.

.....We have had dogs for nearly 40yrs now and have never get used to when their time comes.......Molly our Golden is now 11 this year & is beginning to show her age some....cataracts, lumps, slowing down a bit, gums receding (but good teeth yet)....signs of growing old....

Thinking of you and your friend................

IBD

Randy,

Not easy, but the right thing to do.

My lab 17 years, wifes cat 21 years, the our cat  17 years.  I did the last one last summer, she has a spot in the garden in the front of the house...a sundial is her head marker....if I get up in the middle of the night I sometimes see her in the shadows,  they become so much of our lives.

You have to bite the lip and do the right thing Wing.

Wing, A difficult time for sure. I put off the decision for Rocky and then he caught a respiratory disease just from being too weak to fight it off. The vet tried to treat it but that slid into pneumonia and I kicked myself for not acting sooner. Sometimes I blame myself for being selfish about not wanting to lose him. Best of luck in your decision. My sympathies. RD

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Well, I got some good news. We got to the vet and they asked several questions they did some blood work and it looks like Iris is in really good shape for a 15 year old girl.

She has arthritus pretty bad so they gave her some medication for the pain and said to keep an eye on her and go from there. within about an hour after she took her first dose, she was allreadt better. Walking without a limp, getting up by herself and only a little slow on stairs.

I am relieved. I know we are just putting it off for a while, but I couldn't be happier. And as we were pulling out of the vets parking lot, I looked back and I am not kidding, she smiled at me.

Thanks again guys

Great news Wing....and I believe she did smile at you!

...also, we use a product called Rymidel (sp?)for our older dogs for lameness & it seems to work fine.

Good news.  So going to the doctor isn't always  a bad thing.

What is her name?

IBD,

I have tried rymidil and it really didn't help much. They also say it can cause liver problems. I guess in a dog her age, if she was going to have liver problems she would have by now. They gave her 3 different medications that are stronger than Rymidil. Seems to be working

Bear,

I guess sometimes the doctor really does know what he is talking about.

Her name is Iris. I have been around bird dogs a big part of my life. She is by far the best dog I have ever hunted with.
