Here's my new carry pistol.  9mm, alloy frame, 1911.  It fits my commander length holsters and is basically the same pistol, just lighter with lighter ammo.

Mule;

I fail to follow your reasoning.  Me, I'd think the 9 was the summer gun & the .45's would be winter guns.

Just a little lighter.  Been packin' a steel 1911 for several years.  Gettin' tired of the weight.  Don't want a tupperware gun.  And besides, we don't get no winter 'round 'ere.

Looks like a 9, that might be fun to shoot.  I've almost got myself talked into a 1911 in 38 super, I may have to see how this one works for you first.

Yeah, its a 9.  Hell, the differnce in the weight of the ammo is substantial.  Stuck a 10-8 flat trigger on her.   I don't know how it shoots yet.  Still working on a load.  Gotta wait until Midway delivers my dies and brass.  Ordered some LSWC and some FMJs.  I pretty much stick with Penn Bullets in lead, and Hornady FMJs.

Hard to find in a production gun, especially in the 4.25" length.  Springfield makes the EMP, but it's 3".  Kimber makes an alloy 9mm in 3" also.  Kimber CDPs are 3, 4, and 5" and only 45 acp.  I think the Guardian is the only commander-length alloy 9mm.  Too bad DW's not an American owned company anymore.  Doesn't seem right, somehow.

One improvement in this pistol over other alloy frame 1911s is the steel feed ramp attached to the barrel.  I had a Kimber that got beat to heck chambering hollow points and SWC.  I'm not sure I'll carry the new bullets.  Being a 45 guy, I'm not perfectly comfortable with the penetration potential for this little round.  Maybe after shooting it a while I'll feel different.

Nice little carry piece Mule, and you will enjoy shooting the 9mm out of a 1911 platform.  I have the EMP version in 9mm with the alloy frame...light to carry and a joy to shoot.  Had to get used to the shorter sight radius but once I got it figured out it is damn accurate.

PS I like the Gold Dot 124gr in mine.  They do not recommend +p ammo in either the Springfield or Kimber versions.

Yeah, I think that short 3" frame would limit the possibilities some.  I'll make sure the recoil spring is on the heavy side, and work down to get get the reliability I want.  Gonna break it in first with mild ball and a little hard cast ammo.

Sorry so long getting back to you.  Bottom line, I like the pistol but I don't like the grips.  I think I can get used to the bobtail, but the thin grip panels are useless for my monkey fingers.  I actually have "chubby" grip panels made for my other 1911s, just a skosh thicker than standard.  I also use an arched mainspring housing to fill the heal of my hand a little more.  The Dan Wesson has beautiful, slim grip panels.  I'm going to replace them with some standard ones and see if it helps the feel.  Right now, I don't feel like I'm gripping the pistol consistent and tight enough.  I found some bobtail ones cheap at RAASCO grips.

The trigger is superb!  I'm a little concerned about the double-deck mag followers, especially because I had trouble with similar Kimber mags that chewed up the aluminum feed ramp of that pistol (CDP).  The Dan Wesson has an integral barrel/feed ramp of steel, but I'm still going to keep an eye on it to detect any chopping that might happen.  The other thing I need to do is dab some orange paint on the front sight around the tritium vial.  I do that to my pistols now that I'm damn near blind.

The pistol is tight and seems well made otherwise.  It's accurate enough, and that will improve when I get my loads and grip right.  The bushing is nice and tight, and its a thicker one made by EGW.  Slop in the bushing of a new 1911 is a warning sign in my book.  The small parts are also well made.  The factory recoil spring was too light, at 12#.  I put a 14# one in and it ejects and goes back into battery much better.

That's the scoop.  When I get my loads right, I'll post some targets.  I haven't received the Golden Sabers I ordered.  They were my 2nd choice.  Speer Gold Dots are on backorder, but they're not expected anytime soon due to demand for factory ammo.

Boy or boy....Where's Don Rickles when you really need him?

Right here.........

Maybe instead of Gold Dot's you might consider some CCI .45acp SHOT loads.....you won't need such a "fine" bead to hit the target...
