Scope question

Ok my boy is wanting to replace is el cheapo scope for something decent. He has a Remington 700 and it is a .270. what are some decent priced and quality scopes? I have always been a fan of nikons so I have been leaning that way. I don't want him to spend $1000 on a Leupold tho. Any suggestions and opinions would be great.

What I'd suggest would differ according to the budget.  So, could you please give us an idea of where you'd like to be money-wise?

However, I have several Nikon scopes myself.  I find them to be very good in optical quality, and have not had to put their warranty to the test.  That being said, most of my Nikons are Monarchs.  I also have one  Buckmaster that has seen very little use, and one Pro Staff that just went on the gun last week & maybe has suffered the recoil of 30 .22 rimfire rounds.

I also have several Leupold scopes.   Being the cheap SOB that I am, I know for a stone cold fact that you can obtain a perfectly good Loopy for far less than a thousand dollars. 

A scope I would urge you to take a look at is the Weaver Grand Slam line.  I have one, and it's glass is on a par with the better Leupold's and Nikon's in my opinion.  I only have the one scope, but I would buy another if they'd start putting the reticle I want in their line-up. 

The best scopes that I have though, are the Zeiss Conquests.   However, they are spendy.  OTOH, in optics you pretty much get what you pay for.  I'm happy.

The only thing I'd warn you off of is Burris.  I know that they are popular in some circles, but my experience, with two of 'em, is that you can do much better elsewhere.  One, I literally gave away & t'other I sold.

I just bought a new Bushnell 3x9x50 a few weeks ago for $270.00. It's not too cheap or too expensive for something that you'll only use seasonally.

wow I got a lot to check out ...........thanks. I am wanting to stay around $300 or so, but with that being said if it meant spending a little more to get a much better grade of a scope I would. All the advice is much appreciated folks ! Like I've said before I have always loved guns but just don't know a lot about them.

Thanks wing master ! It also says free shipping for over I think $199 so we are good. when it's time I'll probably get it from them....Are they local to your area? I like to keep money with the small guys when it is possible

  Burris Fullfeild II best in my book for under $200. This came back to me just yesterday when I spoke with my son in Caliy. He bought a Tikka in .223 and I asked him what scope he was going for he said a Fullfield,I said why ? He said when they shoot yotes it's at dusk and he likes the light they gather.

Redfield is owned by Leupold.  Leupold offers the same warranty on the Redfield line as they do on the Leupolds.  I don't have one but know a couple of people who do & they are very happy.

I may have seen this way too late, but, no matter how much more it cost, I would opt for the Leupold. I have tried them all. I look through rifle scopes for hours, spotting scopes too. All I can say is, quality optics make for quality viewing. Lesser (notice I didn't say cheaper) scopes are made for giving you headaches. That being said, I have come to the conclusion that most scopes produced these days, are optically perfect. Now, the split comes in service. Some scopes will take a real ass ripping and lesser ones will not. By ass ripping, I mean in terms of abuse, neglect, and accidents. There are many scopes out there, but I buy the best I can afford for longevity purposes. These days, I buy Leupolds and steel El Paso Weavers. The latter I use until I can squirrel away enough to buy a Leupold. Then there are Swarovski's, Dr. Optics, and Zeisse. For the most part, those scopes are the equivalent of a wet dream. Personally, my only gripe with them is cosmetic. I am not a lover of European style. You have probably already bought your scope and I really hope that I haven't offended you. I know that they also make Fords and Chevy's for people who don't like one or the other. In the end, it's what YOU want that matters.....................Kingpin

my howa 1500 223 has a niko sterling 3X10X44 on it until i bought that gun i never even heard of that brand but i was amazed at the quality i also like bushnells my savage m110 .280 rem has one 3X9X40 and it has never been knocked out of alignment even when my dad "accidently" dropped it on a rock
