Right now, it's time to clean house on Sac-a-lait, which many of you would know better as white perch. Down here, this is the prime time for them, if the damn rain would quit muddying up all the water. Won't be long before it's bream time. I take it most of ya'll are more the fly fishing/ice fishing sort. Ever been bream fishin with a cricket?

Daniel, Up here in the north we call Bream Bluegills or some folks call them Sunfish. A big one up here is about the size of a man's hand. I think they get a lot bigger down your way. Crickets work well but the summer bait of choice up here is red wigglers or night crawlers whichever you have. In the winter meal worms or mousees, a type of maggot are the baits of choice under the ice. RD

There are actually several species of these fish which is why I used the broad term of bream. Bluegill is one of them. I certainly admit that I've no clue which species ya'll may have up there, but down here, the sunfish and red ears are easy pickins on crickets. Best thing in the world is to get a young kid on a bed of bream during early spring. We also have chinquapin, which are also bream, but feed off of the bottom. Those are the ones that we catch on worms. They are aka shell crackers, and get bigger than other bream species. Pound for pound, I don't think there is a harder fighting freshwater fish than bream. They eat pretty damn well also.
Cheers. |

I used to catch Bream when i lived in England. Not sure what species of Bream it was though. All i remember is that they were really thin but deep.
