Is everyone Magnum crazy, or is it jest me bein plain crazy.  I continually get ribbed fer bein "old school," for saying that a '06 is the best round for all but dangerous game.  I remember when I was under and liked getting the snot knocked out of me, but I couldn't hit like I can today.  I'm still thinkin about getting that a nice quality "fine shooting," rifle in 270 or '06 but the local yocals keep tellin me I'm just too dang old.

Spot shooter; Nothing wrong with your judgement, as far as I can see! The '06 is plenty for practically anything that North America offers, and probably most of the rest of the world. I own and shoot Magnums, but would not feel very badly if I was limited to one of several non-magnums that I can think of, including the 7x57. Regards, Eagleye.

I think you're crazy for caring what the locals are telling you.  Folks gotta shoot what they like, SPOT SHOOTER.  If you don't think a magnum suits you, don't get a damn magnum.  GET WHAT YOU WANT !!!  Pretty simple    .

Further, if you think that "an '06 is the best round for all but the dangerous game" that's perfectly fine.  Yell it to the world.  Just don't take offense when the magnum boys try to put ya in your place over that one.  I don't think it means that your thinking is wrong, per say.  Just that the magnum boys will never agree with it    .  Later.  >>  klallen

I said this on another board and and got a LOT or response, but not much (real) argument:

There hasn't been a cartridge introduced since 1950, rifle or pistol, that has filled a real ballistic need. If it wasn't for the .222 Remington, that date could be pushed back to 1935.

.45 Colt;

First one I can think of is the Winchester .338 magnum.  It did fill a hole between the .300 H&H & the .375 H&H.  Now I'm aware that Elmer & the boys had brought out the .333 OKH prior to 1950, but it was never a commercial cartridge that I know of.   The OKH, Whelen et al, in that area simply were a step down from where the .338 is.  Just my .o2.

Spot - Hey if you want a .270 or .30-06 go for it. There outta be plenty for sale on the used racks when all the boys trade 'em in for the new-fangled WSM's and SAUM's. LOL.

Personally, I'll keep my .270 and a couple of .30-06's. That all said, it doesn't stop me from wanting a 7mm WSM, neither.

Regards, Marcus.

Its these "short magnums" that people are getting crazy over. If i could get one in left hand, for 100 bucks, that weighs 7 lbs, and kicks like a .22 i would get it. But until then, no.

Excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, Marcus.  We don't need to be spreading that little tid-bit of info. around.  A low point in the rifle battery.  We won't even discuss the .270          !!!  Take it easy.  >>  klallen

"270 in a Savage even"

You little goonie, NH_HUNTER.  Is nothing sacred around here?  As if my '06 possession isn't bad enough, you choose to pull "ALL" the skeletons out of the closet, or gun safe as it were, with your .270 comment.  Reporting cartridge AND make of rifle?  Low blow indeed.  Might as well pull all the stops out.  It's topped with a Tasco     ...     ohhhhhhhhh, the humanity !!!

I'll check on that '06 rumor, TAS.  There might be one floating around in the back of the safe somewhere.  I've heard this particular cartridge has a way of multiplying mysteriously (i.e. the twelve '06's in Marcus' collection    ) so I might just find a couple more hiding back there I didn't even know I had.

Now, can we please, somehow get back to the MAGNUM chat.  All this standard talk is making me a little nervous, anxious, and uneasy.  Trigger finger's starting to twitch and I'm developing a rash something fierce.      Later fellas.  >>  klallen

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I bet that 7.82mm Warbird will kick even a buff's ass if it is loaded with the right bullet. Hell, it could maybe take down an elephant with a lung shot, and shoot through a tank.

NH_Hunter

BTW: Korey, does this make up for the little cough .270 cough remark?

I gotta say I like to watch the "magnum" guy's shooting at the range.  I have only seen one or two shoot more than 20 rounds.  They say there not flinchin but their groups say otherwise, try dry chamberin a round fer them and watch their heads move when the firing pin clicks.

Anyway, 7x57 was a deadly elephant round from what I've read, so what changed?  348, and 358 are tarriffic performers on whitetails at 24 to 2500 FPS.  So what's the need fer a 3.6" ultra mag cartridge, muzzle break an all your overkill.

Need for magnums?Who cares. Its the fun.I like the 7x57 the 308 270 243 223 22 35 etc etc but I also like the 30-378 460 7mm  300 and most any other magnum as well.Wish I had one of each caliber made.Shoot what makes you happy.Shooting and hunting are meant to be fun.I suppose a person could probably make do with just one rifle but  why would you limit yourself.Have a good one macca.

Man, when I first saw your Topic title, I thought you guys figured me out already.

I wonder how those Alaskans and westerners survived all the grizz's and brownies before the advent our own mags in 1958 - I don't think many had 300 and 375 H & H's.

i prefer the standards myself, but like korey says, shoot what YOU like and don't worry about what the guy down the road thinks about it.

also, like macca says, don't let the bastards (on either ide of the mag/standard debate) drag you down!!!!
