I don't carry my 1911 very often, but when I do I carry it cocked and locked. I was at work a few days ago and one of the guys saw it and acted scared that the hammer was back. I really never thought about that perception before. I know it is perfectly safe to carry, but alot of people only see a cocked gun. I spent about 10 minutes showing him how the 2 safetys worked and later he asked if I would take him shooting sometime. Maybe I will recruit a new shooter into the sport. Anyway, How do you guys that carry 1911's carry them? Wing master |

Wing; If you're carrying a 1911 for self defense, cocked & locked makes the best sense. There are, of course other ways, but they all have real serious drawbacks in my opinion. That being said, I don't normally carry anything but my H&K USPc for SD. 900F |

Have any of you ever had someone notice the hammer back and comment about it? Wing master |

BigAl; Normally, safty engaged & hammer down. However, if I get bad vibes late at night in "disadvantaged" neighborhoods, it might be possible that it's in condition 1. 900F |

cocked & locked is the ONLY way to carry it (IMHO) if you have any intentions of using it for "real"........but with an ambi safety lever for those of us in our right minds.......altho I have mostly deferred to a Glock 22 cuz it is lighter to carry......

A cocked and locked 1911 is SAFER than your typical tupperware DA pistol with no external safety. A 1911 has TWO safeties, whereas the others have none. Glocks have the highest instances of negligent discharges I know of. Yeah, it looks scary if you're not used to it, but remember, you must grip the grip safety, and disengage the thumb safety just to give your trigger finger a chance to do the dirty work. NDs happen because of one reason, people pull the triggers when they're not supposed to. A proper functioning 1911 makes that much harder to do. I carry ONLY 1911s.

All of the officers I worked with carried 1911's cocked and locked.I carry my sig P220 round in chamber decocked. I also alternate between two wheelguns 6" 357 mag & 38spec 2".

220's are meant to be carried, one in the pipe and decocked. Hammer down with the safety on with a 1911 is what we in the trade call a dead mans gun. Especially if it's a series 70 with no firing pin block. Well, honestly, any 1911 with no firing pin block can AD. It's an inertia fire if the gun is dropped and hits on the muzzle. There also is no safe way to lower the hammer on a loaded chamber no matter what anyone says. The half cock notches on the hammer will not stop the hammer from striking the firing pin if the gun falls out of the holster. Condition one is the only safe way to carry a 1911. I carry mine a lot and do NOT care what people think when they see a cocked pistol. Better to be cocked and in my holster and be seen, than to be seen with me holding it cocked and pointed at them. It's just polite I guess. They should in all honesty, be looking at or for my gun. It's kind of like staring at someone who has a big nose..................Kingpin |

They problem here is the 1911 is not and never was a CCW. It is a service pistol and wasn't meant to be carried for a quick action draw and fire, defense. I know of only a few officers that carry 1911s as their concealed gun. They are all very young and "energetic/B.heavy" types. The 1911 is about the worst CCW weapon I can think of, short of a revolver with busted firing pin. this is a gun that was meant to be carried in a snap/flap holster for trench warfare, by officers. dah Not a CCW period, unless you are 5'9" and weight 325# and live in an area that has everyone in a coat 11 months of the year(buffalo, NY). any dude can spot a concealed 1911 25 foot away. Just no way to carry something that big, concealed. But if someone wants to carry such for CCW, cocked and locked is the way to go. I love the mechanism of the 1911 but it's purpose is long gone. |

You can fix the inertia issue without a firing pin block. You just need the right firing pin and an extra power FP spring. Bear, you are wrong. With an IWB and proper attire, it is impossible to tell someone is carrying a 1911. Besides, a 1911 is thinner than most pistols such as a Sig 220. There are 1911s that wouldn't make a good service pistol in any sense, but they are great carry guns. If I thought I could be made carrying a 1911 I wouldn't be carrying one. The right rig makes all the difference, even for a skinny guy. |

While Mule may be right about springs and high speed firing pins, I wouldn't rely on them as a kind of safety. Yes, AD's are less likely with these parts, they still happen. A good holster or a death grip on the gun is the best way to avoid dropping it.....................Kingpin

The only people in the world that don't know you are carrying a 1911 trying to conceal it are.........you and the vision impaired. A nice peice for a vehicle/uniformed LEO. I bought my first 1911 from DCM and it cost me all of $17...I regret selling it for $25. |
