I was out side digging through My stash of shotgun shells, Sorting them out and loading up My bird vest. I acquired some "OLD" shells from a guy this summer and thought I should see what I got. A lot of them were Junk but it looks like there is around 50 I can use. I tossed any thing rusty or old style steel ( the some times rusted to gather to make a steel slug ). What I ended up with was bunch of asst size lead Light to medium shot hells and may be 20 Paper case Mark 5- #5's. They Look Brand new so I'm going to use them first. There a bit heavy for sharptail and a smidgen light for Sage grouse but they will work ( I think). My 870 seams to run through the gun fine, but I think I'll pull the plug so I can hold 6 in the gun just in case some don't go Bang. Tuesday I'll give them a try, hope to have all my fingers to type a report when we get back..?? |

My 870 Wingmaster functions with the same junk shells without a hitch. I also inherit shells some from other 'older' duck hunters. Those old steel were funny. I know the rust/fuse to a slug well, was hunting blue wings in a swamp and had a drake light in among my deks. After a minute it got nervous and took of. As it when upward and cleared the cattails I raised the pump and fired. The steel had indeed become a slug; it was at most 9 months old but may have been ejected at the end of the day into a boat with a few inches of water and blood in the bottom. It hit the duck's leg about 4 inches up from the web and cut it clean off. the duck continued on, and the leg feel down into the decoys. And I hope it lived a long life as a one legged blue wing teal. When I pulled my decoys I found the leg in the pool. Thankfully they have made progress in the non-lead shells.
