So, when I posted the first thread I had just started to enter what I always considered the "exclusive" scope club called Leupold. For as long as I have been shooting rifles guys around me have been expousing the virtues of that particular brand. "The only scope to have is a Leupie!" or "Why put a [name your other scope brand here] on a [enter your high dollar figure] rifle"? 'Course, they would usually admit "It's okay to put that [name of cheaper scope] on that [low dollar] rifle". But then again, there's even some that demand to have Leupold on everything, even the lowliest of "truck rifle"...... now I'm not saying this is a bad thing! In fact for the second time in almost as many months, I have entered yet again......."Club Leupold"!

I just picked up another one... an excellent condition, used, matte VariX-II 3-9x40mm. This one is a lot newer series than the gloss blue 3-9x40mm one I got a couple months back that has the "plum" colored knob covers. Now here's the dillema.... 'course gettin' another new [to me] scope means juggling scopes around. One has to "sellect" the lucky rifle to get this premium piece of glass on it! So, here's my choices.....

1. Tikka 695 6.5x55mm  [currently has a matte B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm on it].

2. Rem 700 BDL .30-06 22" barrel [currently has a Tasco WC+ 3-9x44mm on it].

3. Winchester M70 .30-06 24" barrel [B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm on it now].

'Course right now I am leaning on putting the new Leupold on the Tikka 6.5x55mm, moving the B&L over onto the Rem BDL .30-06 and then the Tasco World Class Plus 3-9x44mm can go back on the Rem 788 carbine 7mm-08 [replacing a more modest Bushnell Banner D&D 3-9x40mm that's on it now]....

Anyway, for the time being I think I am going to concentrate on acquiring a couple more Leupolds and continue "upgrading" the glass on some rifles [instead of buying more rifles!]. That's my plan anyway...

Can anyone out there tell me about their experiences with the Leupold VariX-II fixed power 6x42mm scopes? That one maybe my next "target" on the quest to be a card-carrying member of "Club Leupold".

Regards, Marcus.

I used to be a mag/news photog stringer and found that the best optics may not give the best picture. However if you like what you look through, know what it can and more important CANNOT do, and practice with it you get real good. have had inexpensive optics as well as hig priced spread.

Moved some scopes around this afternoon...

Put the new [to me] matte VariX-II 3-9x40mm on my light barrel Rem 700 .308 [my first centerfire rifle recently reacquired]. Took the older gloss blue VariX-II 3-9x40mm [the one with the plum colored covers] off it and put it on the Rem 700 BDL .30-06. The Tasco World Class Plus 3-9x44mm went back onto the Rem 788 carbine in 7mm-08.

That leaves the Tikka stainless 6.5x55mm with the matte B&L Elite 3-9x40mm on it, which is fine. Maybe if I come across another deal on a Leupold it'll get the treatment next.......

Regards, Marcus.

that's a lot of work to keep the tasco around...

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Dakota - I guess you're right. I am on a quest to upgrade some of the scopes I have. That Tasco WC+ had been on that Rem 788 before and in that combo, that rifle shoots! The Tasco is a much better scope than the Bushnell Banner Dusk&Dawn series IMHO. That I can tell from looking down the tube, comparing the brightness and clarity between the two. The D&D scope would do, I'm sure, but since I already know what the Tasco will do on that rifle, it went back on.

I now have two Bushnell 3-9x40mm D&D's that are just "extra" scopes for me. Got a super deal when I bought 'em. However, both are going on my table at the next gun show. The proceeds are going towards another Leupold - probably a spankin' new VariX-I 2-7x33mm.

Regards, Marcus.

North Logan,

I too need to quit buying so many guns and concentrate on getting good glass.  I've gotta get a good scope for my 7 STW and my Ruger 300 Win. Mag.  Was thinking something in the 4-12 X range, probably a Luppy VX I or II.  Dag gone it though, I really want another deer rifle (270, 280, 7 Rem Mag, 308, 7X57, 7-08)!  Not that I need it.  I already have a 257 Roberts, 30-06, 7 STW, 7 RUM, 300 Win. Mag.  Need to get rid of some of those magnums or trade for something that I want, I mean need.  Oh hell, I'll probably just keep them all and keep buying new ones and get the glass when I can!
