Topic: S&W 4006 Posted: 20 May 2004 at 16:55 |
Been looking for a stainless steel pistol that shoots .40 S&W ammo & that has a traditional rifled barrel. Looks like I found one...

Looking forward to working up some lead target load for it...

Hey... anybody else like S&W stainless steel autos? Yeah, I know they aren't a Colt 1911 but then they ain't a Glock, either...
I've also got the big brother to this 4006 in .40 S&W... a 1066 in 10mm...set up with the same soft Hoque grips...

I carried a Smith 4516 for a year, and finally traded it off. I'm 6'3", and 235 or so, and at the end of the day I felt I was leaning due to the weight!. Never cared for the grip shape and angle either. Not bad, just isn't "1911 comfortable".

Hi CB - Yeah the 4006 did spawn from the Model 59 and the ilk... That said I have owned a few S&W autos over the years... I had an original Model 59 9mm NIB that was factory bright nickel... it shot okay but the tigger was crappy. Guess that's where Jeff Cooper got the name "crunchenticker" from. Also had a second generation 459 and the compact 469, both in 9mm, too. Also briefly had a third gen 5904. Didn't care for the 1st and 2nd generation S&W autos.
Despite being a die-hard 1911 man and also a fan of the Glock [I don't care what anyone says about them - they work!] I do have a spot for the 3rd generation stainless-steel S&W autos.... my Model 1066 10mm shot circles around my Colt Delta Elite 10mm. When it came time to choose between the two when I was liquidating some of my handguns a few years back [that's another saga!] it was the Delta that went & I kept the S&W...
I am excited about getting this 4006... just waiting it to clear our govt bureaucratic process before taking possession... I wanted a .40 cal pistol that I could load up lead target loads for since the brass is virtually free where I'm at...will post range results when I get it....

Sir North;
I'll admit I knew that. I just can't help twitting S&W auto fanciers. Almost got a Montana Hwy Patrolman in the shop the other day to blow steam out his ears. Kept referring to the S&W on his hip as a 59. I found out it was a .40, had just had the trigger worked over & he thought it was accurate as hell on wheels. Maybe it was, who knows.
As for me: I thought the 59, when it first came out, was the finest thing in pistoldom. My opinion rapidly went downhill in high gear. I'll cheerfully admit that Smith may have improved them somewhat, but the chances of me actually buying one are pretty remote. Not when things like my H&K offer so much more.
To say the slide mounted safety is ergonomicaly incorrect on a Smith is one of the more obvious understatements available to the shooting public. Unlike the frame mounted operating lever on the H&K, which just happens to position itself very much like the 1911 pattern guns.
True, I'm saddled with the polygonal barrel, but one doesn't hear of KA-BOOMS with the H&K's, lead or no lead. So, truth be told, I don't consider myself to be 'saddled' with the hexagonal bore at all. Besides, with copper-washed lead bullets so flippin' cheap, I don't understand why people use naked lead anyway. I've put thousands of rounds of washed lead through the H&K with nary a hiccup.
It's either a good gun, or I'm CB900F the almighty & leading a charmed life.

CB - Sad thing is that a lot of cops, everywhere don't really have a clue what they are talking about when it comes to firearms... I had a bit of a set to a few months back with a recently retired municipal copper from an adjoining agency who was trying to tell me that his agency had issued "Beretta 10mm's". He wouldn't believe that the only two ctg's approved for cop's issue sidearms in BC were the .40S&W and the 9mm Luger. He really got mad when I told him his agency was issued Beretta's in .40S&W ctg, although the bullet diameter is rated at 10mm. He still thinks he was issued and carried a Beretta 10mm... Assclown!
I think the 'Ka-Boom' issue with Glocks is caused by the case not being properly supported in the area of the rear of the chamber as opposed to the hexagonal rifling of the barrel. I bet if you were to compare a ctg in the barrel of an HK to a Glock you would find a better ctg support in that area. I think this is what causes cases to sometimes rupture and blow down thru the mag well, causing the 'Ka-Boom' issue. If you check out .40S&W casings that have been fired in Glocks they are all bulged at the base. Doesn't seem to happen as much with the Glock 9mm's.
No question the HK is a fine pistol. But this S&W cost me about 1/3 of what an HK .40 cal would cost me up here and I bet I can shoot the S&W just as well...
I agree about the copper wash bullets. But I have dies in both .40S&W and 10mm and a few thousand all lead hard cast bullets to use up before I have to buy any new ones. I will be going to the copper wash ones then. Of course I have a line on a free supply of .40S&W casings, although they are slightly bulged at the base...
Regards, Marcus.

Sir North;
Oh Yeah!! Yes, the H&K does have a fully-supported chamber. Have you seen the picture of the H&K barrel after they deliberately lodged a squib in the barrel & then fired a full power load behind it? Slightly bulged the barrel, & that was the total extent of the damage.
I found my sales receipt for my H&K, which is a fairly early one. Didn't quite run me $605.00. Now I'll tell anybody right now, that if I could find a 4006 Smith for $202.00 in good working shape, why I do believe that I'd own it. Might have to put a new rear sight on it though, just so's some yahoo wouldn't mistake it for a model 59.

Sir North;
Is that your ride? It's got enough power, but a bit too ungainly for me. It'll be a late day, etc., before you'd see me buying a 'Wing either. I'd rather have the big Kwacker sport-tourer.
I ought to try & find a pic of a CB900F on the net & see if I can pick it up & carry it over here.

Sir North;
The smaller upper pic is of the newer 919 Hornet. The larger pic of the black & orange beast is indeed a 1981 CB900F. Somebody has put an accessory head fairing on it with a different headlight though. Seat's been changed too.
Is it just a pic you found, or did you take it? It's very much what my bike looked like when new. Beautiful restoration if it's a present day pic. However, it bears only general resemblence to mine as it currently exists.
Thanks, 900F

CB - The CB900F pics are just some I scooped off the 'Net by doing a search under 'Google'... same as the Honda ST1300 pictured above...
To answer your earlier question, the ST1300 is not my 'personal ride' but the agency I work for is going to them as the 'motor' of choice... We just traded off 10 Harley Davidson 'Road Kings' for 10 brand new Honda ST1300's. We added our own 'custom mods' to run emergency equipment and some custom graphics to 'mark' them, but other than that they're stock. I will post some pics of the one I get to ride in the next few days.
After many years of 'motorcycling' on different bikes, the Honda ST1300 is a nice ride! I wouldn't hesitate to own one personally if I had the chance, either.
Regards, Marcus.
