prairie chickens

I'm looking to put a prairie chicken next to my bobcat mount and have never shot a "chicken" in my life.  My father used to tell of them and want one in memory of his words.

Where do I find huntable populations.....

I've got some leads in Colorado but would appreciate some in Nebraska as well.....any help?

I did get a "chicken" permit for Colorado and will post photos if I'm lucky enough to get a few.

My labrador will love the get away as well.

 Very similar but not the same. I think you have to go to like NO or SO Dakota to find chicken.

OK then, what's the difference, if any, between a Prairie Chicken and a Sage Hen?

I do know that with sage hens, you don't want to shoot the larger, slower, birds.  When you skin them, if you look carefully, you can see the  logo:  "Goodyear Tire & Rubber" vulcunized into the breast.

A friend of mine has a mount of a bobcat laying down , head raised with sharptail pinned under one paw.  No snarl on the kitty just a very realistic pose. A bit of grass and sage around to complete the diorama.

At one time he had a live lynx that had the run of the back porch and would get out to prowl the house atnight. My little cocker spaniel was the only thing that could co exist with "Mad Max."  At night the dog would look at the glowing eyes of the lynx in the porch, at the mounted bob cat then back to the lynx . She never could figure out what was going on.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here.  Yes, there is a difference.  I've hunted and shot both.  We have both Sharptail grouse and Sage grouse (prairie chickens) here in Montana.  Check the Upland Bird Regulations.  The season starts on September 1 for both, with Sage grouse ending on Nov 1 and Sharptail ending on Jan 1.

My understanding is there are three different birds. Sharptail, prairie chicken and sage grouse.

Prairie chickens were once very numerous here in Sask but I do not believe there are any left. Many people here erroneously call the sharp tail a priairie chicken .  There are a very few sage grouse here.

 

A correction to my post above. The mount my buddy has is of a bob cat and a hungarian partridge not a sharp tail .

 I was out hunting today and stopped at my friend to get a few snaps of the mount I mentioned above. Sorry for the lighting but it is placed on top of a wall unit and I had to get on a chair to take the shots so no way to use tripod and I had to go with auto setting .
