I'm looking to put a prairie chicken next to my bobcat mount and have never shot a "chicken" in my life.  My father used to tell of them and want one in memory of his words.

Where do I find huntable populations.....

I've got some leads in Colorado but would appreciate some in Nebraska as well.....any help?

Fella's;

OK then, what's the difference, if any, between a Prairie Chicken and a Sage Hen?

I do know that with sage hens, you don't want to shoot the larger, slower, birds.  When you skin them, if you look carefully, you can see the  logo:  "Goodyear Tire & Rubber" vulcunized into the breast.

I've killed and eaten sage hens in Wyoming.....fried thin in bacon grease the stuff was delightful.....the bird smells much like sage brush when eviscerated....and the bird is quite a bit larger.....maybe three times the size.

A friend of mine has a mount of a bobcat laying down , head raised with sharptail pinned under one paw.  No snarl on the kitty just a very realistic pose. A bit of grass and sage around to complete the diorama.

At one time he had a live lynx that had the run of the back porch and would get out to prowl the house atnight. My little cocker spaniel was the only thing that could co exist with "Mad Max."  At night the dog would look at the glowing eyes of the lynx in the porch, at the mounted bob cat then back to the lynx . She never could figure out what was going on.

I never saw much use in sage hens, sharpies and huns are much better eating.  I'd sooner become a vegetarian and eat the sage itself, before I'd bother with sage hens again.  Sage's probably more tender and tastes less like sage, than sage hens do anyway.

My Dad's from SD and talked about how good prairie chickens were to eat, so I'm sure they're not like sage hens at all.  I think they live in grasslands not sage also.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here.  Yes, there is a difference.  I've hunted and shot both.  We have both Sharptail grouse and Sage grouse (prairie chickens) here in Montana.  Check the Upland Bird Regulations.  The season starts on September 1 for both, with Sage grouse ending on Nov 1 and Sharptail ending on Jan 1.

Greater sage-grouse and prairie chickens are two different species, as 45 pointed out.

My understanding is there are three different birds. Sharptail, prairie chicken and sage grouse.

Prairie chickens were once very numerous here in Sask but I do not believe there are any left. Many people here erroneously call the sharp tail a priairie chicken .  There are a very few sage grouse here.

A correction to my post above. The mount my buddy has is of a bob cat and a hungarian partridge not a sharp tail .

Ok, I stand corrected.

It looks like there are 4 kinds of prairie grouse: Sage grouse, Sharptail grouse, Greater prairie chickens, and Lesser prairie chickens.

Like I posted eariler, I've been hunting prairie grouse in eastern Montana for over 30 years: Sage grouse and Sharptails.  The local ranchers referred to Sage grouse as "sage hens", "sage chickens", and "prairie chickens".  I knew that there were both Greater and Lesser prairie chickens, but from the local names, I (wrongfully) assumed that the Sage grouse were the same as the Greater prairie chickens.

I was out hunting today and stopped at my friend to get a few snaps of the mount I mentioned above. Sorry for the lighting but it is placed on top of a wall unit and I had to get on a chair to take the shots so no way to use tripod and I had to go with auto setting .

It is a hun. Note the grey breast feathers and slight redish tinge on the head.  The grey breast gives huns the alternate name of Grey Partridge which is used in Europe.

Also in the last pic you can see the bird's bare foot. Sharpies wear socks......feathered all down their legs to bottom of feet.
