Well it waas raining and 39 degrees this morning at 6:43 when the archer season opened.   I rolled over at 4:45am, then at 6:00am, then at 7:00am; I slept till 8:37am  GREAT.

Had a little heart surgery on tues.  So I did not want to push pneumonia too.

At 1:00 it was 58 degrees and sunny with lots of clouds and wind, I went to my tree stand.  Saw 9 deer (one 9 point), I had easy shots (within 20 yds standing) at a nice 6 point (illegal), two small does(legal) and one button buck (legal).  Past all.  3 1/2 months of hunting left, so I could never shoot a buck this early.

Cold to the bone now.  Two vodka martinis, stired not shaken.  It is 6 pm the best time but I'm taking the family (including my 91 year old mother) to dinner for my brother's 61 year old birthday.  You  would have though dad would have had that kid in the springtime, non-hunting season.

Bear,

Sound's like you had a good morning, start takin a slingshot - pick up some acorns and ejoy yourself with squirrels.  Make sure ya get the small hard acrons', they go fast and really piss of them red squirrels.

I've been workin 12 or more hour day's so I skipped this weekend to spend some time with Mrs. Spot shooter, and the boy.  Surprised yer up so quick after surgery - take it easy.  You got it right, pick a good buck - make sure ya send pictures.

BEAR,

Glad to see you made it out to hunt this past weekend.  I'm envious!  Seems like everyone on this board is going after furry critters and I'm stuck trying to shoot doves and ducks!

Weather in my neck of the woods was really good for hunting this past weekend.  Hope it's like that for this upcoming Saturday,  I'm gonna be after tree rats with my 22 Marlin (always a fun and traditional hunt).

One last note and not a lecture.  Be careful out there.  I lost a hunting buddy back in high school days who had heart problems and passed away while turkey hunting due to a stroke.  You know your own limits and it sure does help to get out in the woods I'm sure but be careful.

Good luck and let us know if you happen to arrow any one of them keystone bucks!

I've always pushed my limits, but my health has been going down hill over the last few years.  My will allows me to push thru a lot....but now I'm afraid if I get stuck trying to drag a decent buck....some one will be draggin me.  So I will be hunting REALLY EASY this year.....in the hope that I'll be able to hunt at all next year.

Looks like tomorrow will be bright and dry and cold.  I've got to get out or go crazy.  Flintlock or archery?????

I've got a pump Remington 22 that works great for squirrels?  Don't know if I am up to walking the walking the hardwoods.  Got a Dr appointment at 8 am tomorrow.  His opinion will help me decide.  If I can't hunt, I'll at least go to the range.  My Ruger No 1 in 7x57 needs some new loads.

....I'm stuck trying to shoot doves and ducks!

"Stuck"...does it get better than good dove shooting and eating?

Bear,

Boy, I know the feeling about being unable to get out and do some stomping around in the woods, it's killing me.  I'll be packing my old longbow and cedar shafts after a whitetail this Saturday so hopefully I'll have some tenderloin to be munchin on soon.  I've killed several deer, turkey and wild boar with a bow but only with a compound.  This will be the second year attempting it with a longbow.

Up until now, I've only been able to get after a few doves, ducks and squirrels.  Did pretty good on the tree rats but doves and ducks have eluded me completely and my palate has gone unsatisfied cause they are mighty tasty!  I haven't fired a shot on 3 days on 3 different properties!  Since deer are a staple critter on our place, things are looking up.

Sounds like you PA guys got about the same situation as us concerning the mast crop.

Flintlock or archery? Hmmm that's a tough one.  I'd probably go with the flintlock since it's been a long time since chasen whiteys and would like to go with something I can shoot a little further than sticks and string.

Anywhoo, I hope it works out for ya and good luck to ya.  If I get something I'll be sure to let the gang know.  Hope you can do the same.

Good huntin!

Mountaineer,

Long bow and cedar shafts...wow.   Started that way in 1963 are you making your own shafts.  For a while I did, sort of like primative reloading.  Unfortuntely I never killed a deer with on of my own Cedars.  I went on to a semi recurve, recurve and than a compound, I'm pround to say with luck I got a deer with all.  Now I'm hunting a crossbow, can't draw a recurve anymore.  I sold my compound, but I can't part with my Browning recurve, maybe my son will take up the sport someday.

Have you tried hunting groundhogs with your long bow....grat fun as you get a good stalk and lots of potential targets.

good luck satruday
