Tikka;
They are Hungarian & have been known to suffer quality control problems in the past. Tackle box only as far as I'm concerned. Even then, I think I'd rather have a Makarov for about the same kinda money, or maybe even a little less. The Yugo Maks have a real good rep as being tough, very well-made little low-cost imports.

Hi Mike... PM reply sent... Further I see some of the PPK clones are still selling up here in Canada... in .380ACP and still for around $125 Canadian...

FEG does make that Browning Hi-Power clone too... called the P9R...

And the P9M...

Regards, Marcus.

My thoughts on cheap auto pistols. These all carry a live shell under the bolt, I just don't trust them. They are in the holster pointed at avery important (to me) part of my anatomy. Worse many are 'semi double/single' action and the hammer is at half cock. I don't trust my valuables with cheap import quality. So that makes them tackle box or plinkers only. I actually trust the new cheapies less than a used Makarov (named after the Big Mac ?). a used one at least has had some time to fail and may have been made under "supervision and standards.
If I wanted something better for defense, I'd buy a used US made revolver or US made auto (Colt pocket pistol in 32 auto).
In my mind cheap auto pistols are for tin can plinking , and there is nothing wrong with that; provided you never think of it as a carry piece.

Maks and Bersa's (Argentinian) can be had for $200 or less. The FEGs I have seen were not all that impressive. I would rather have either of the first two than an FEG.

On the subject of tackle box guns, my tackle box gun is used for snakes. I find 22 bird shot most effective. So I have a cheap 22 lr revolver. the snakes I seem to encounter are usually mean nasty water snakes. While I did shoot a 6 footer witha 9mm S&W one day, it took me aboout 3 shots to hit him with a HP round. The 22 shot makes them coil on the first shot. A doouble action 9mm/380 is not my idea of a target gun and snakes are pretty small and usually moving.
Clearly you guys are better shots than I. A 410 single shot T/C would be my choice, but that doesn't fit in the tackle box.
My off-shore fishing gun is a 12 guage Mossberg, with a box half full of OO buck and half full of slugs. No snakes except two legged sea snakes out there, and a pistol is worthless. A 12 guage slug will go clean thru most 30 foot sportfisherman.

Bear, look at CCI's handgun shot loads. The 9x19 is close to their .38/.357 shotloads, and should shred any snake you are likly to encounter. The .45 ACP shotloads will cycle a 1911, don't know if the 9x19 will cycle or not. Worth a try.

Tackle box gun (?), .357 mag, model 19 loaded with Speer Snake shot.
Personal protection, Model 19 or heavier .357 loaded with Winchester Silver tips
Why do you need a tackle box gun when Smith and Wesson makes the perfect gun for snakes and poachers? The same gun will do for both.
Now, a gun is a gun, and if you feel so inclined, buy it. Keep in mind that some guns are bought for self protection, and some are bought for shooting. The point is, some guns can be used for practice and practical situations, and some guns you can't practice with because they don't stand up to prolonged usage. While I would trust my life with a S&W model 19, i would feel undergunned with an obscure foreign auto pistol. Snakes are best adressed, in a fishing situation, with a revolver loaded with snake shot. Look, if you absolutely need a FEG, by all means, buy one, but a .380 is way to iffy to go after an offending snake...................Kingpin

What ya say is true true. I think sometimes I get caught up in the gun store fever,ya know ya go in and see something new and the bright shinys get all in your face and then your lost like a kid in a candy store. My model 13 will do just fine.

I've not had any experience with the FEG. However, I have had several Tokerovs in my possession in the past, and they were good dependable shooters. These have DEEP penetration, so be careful where you shoot those.
As a C&R collector, I've shot quite a few Eastern Block pistols in the past. As ugly as some are, and as ungainly as some are cosmetically, they have worked pretty well. Luger was probably the worst to shoot. Way over engineered.
My favorite import, that is one of my main carry guns, is the Sistema Colt, from Argentina. It was licensed by Colt, and mine is a low enough serial number, it may have actually been made here in the states when the Argentines were first tooling up. I paid $150 for it a few years back. They are selling for $500 plus now, as they will out shoot many of the custom Colts being put out.

Well folks I went ahead and did it anyway,this is a very comfortale gun and even Momma likes it we took it to the range and it actually shoots very well,we stepped back 20 paces and it shoots better than my Colt Mustang. It's a little hard for her to load the clip very strong spring but it came with 2 clips and now resides in her dresser. Anyway it's a neat little peice and the Mod. 13 is in the tackle box. The one we found is in new condition and went for $125 with 2 clips not bad,I'll post a picture later and I almost left out the best part of the deal,it came in a really neat cardboard box.LOL

Tikka;
T'were me, I'd tear it down for a thorough inspection & cleaning before I did anything else with it. One of the big reasons for that is to know what the wear points look like very early in the gun's career. One of the knocks on the FEG's has been the quality of the steel.
Therefore, if after a hundred rounds, you can see appreciable wear, possibly peening, you know that there isn't a whole lotta new left in the thing. But, you've got to have a base reference point to work from.
Just my .02.
