Topic: Favorite Western Movie Posted: 01 August 2004 at 12:05 |
I'm not sure this is the right place to post this question but here goes.
What is your favorite Western movie? Or favorite western actor?
For myself, I might pick Unforgiven as the movie. I like just about all of Clint Eastwoods movies, but I think that was his best ever.
Course I love any movie John Wayne ever made. Last month I saw a movie with him I had never seen called "Shepperd of the Hills".
So what's your favorites? And who's your favorite actor in them?

Tom Selleck in "Quigley Down Under" is a pretty hard one to beat. Most John Wayne movies and any with Sam Elliot in them also.

THAT is a hard question, and I can't narrow it down to one. Some of my favorites are;
Red River
Centennial
Cheyenne Social Club
Little Big Man
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Wild Bunch
Jack Ellam, Slim Pickens, Richard Farnsworth, and Ben Johnson are my choice for the best western charectors, although they seldom got top billing.
If some of you younger guys have never seen these, they are worth looking for.
I imagine I will remember some more good ones to add on!

Oooo! Oooo! I got some more!
Destry Rides Again
North to Alaska
The Magnificent Seven
My Name is Trinity
My Darling Clementine
The Searchers
Stage Coach
Tombstone
Outlaw Josey Wales
The Undefeated
OK, OK, I'll stop now. BUT, if you watch the listed movies, you will see the best of the genre.

Once Upon a TIme in the West---every shot was an homage to
another western, but it was done so well and with such love you
never notice and it stands up by itself.
The Wild Bunch- I liked Sam he was an original.
Those 2 and a desert Island I could make it for a while...maybe.

Anything with Eastwood
But I must say "The Unforgiven" was perty powerful towards the bar scene with Gene.
I'm sure spot_shooter would agree!

Damn! Got disconnected!
Ron, you mentioned two movies I made props for, Son of the Morning Star, and Dances With Wolves.
Son of the Morning Star was the best deal, as they wanted to rent, rather than buy. So I made more on the rentals than what the pieces were worth. And I got some good insurance claims for damage. Remember the scene where they are raiding a village, and a horse runs right across a blanket strip? That was mine. Hard on 'em! Anyway, I repaired the items, and then sold them, advertised as, "Used in the movie..." This stuff brings premium prices.
Made out like a bandit!

The Outlaw Josey Wales, Quigley Down Under, Lonesome Dove.
But for truth and comedy: City Slickers Best line in the flick "Women need a reason to make love.........men just need a place". Jack Polance was so good they made him a twin for the sequel.

Another vote for Shane even if Allan Ladd was not like the Shane as described in the book Jack Palance more than made up for it. I used to study the novel in English classes with grade 8 students. Turned the classroom into a combo bar and store as in the movie We had saddles, branding irons ammo and "wiskey" for sale Complete with occassional gunfights and even a vamp on the piano with feather boa. ( had to send her to the Principal's office..slinky dress and no bra. The note I had her take had 2 circles with a dot in the center of each and a message .."Please handle these matters") My God would that raise issues of violence and sexism today. A whole afternoon was spent doing skits the kids wrote and presented.
Another great movie was Cat Balleau.....hey Fonda did look okay when young and politics didn't come into the movie. Lee Marvin plays A drunk former gunfighter a la Shane...even his horse is out of it, leaning against a wall with its legs crossed as Lee sleeps off a drunk before the big rescue scene when they save a young man from the gallows
Evil Roy Slade has a villan travel to New York sort of like the Butch and Sundance boys. However his old ways surface when he attends a chamber music recital and can't help pulling a gun on the gal playing the cello and insisting that she "Get that fiddle out from between her legs and under her chin where it belongs"

I can't believe NOBODY has mentioned Peckinpah's Ride the High Country! Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott. On of the finest westerns ever made. BTW, the tents in the miner's camp came from the Mutiny on the Bounty set, seems the studio had all this canvas available...
Scott was the topkick in The Horse Soldiers as his career was kinda winding down.
Jeramiah Johnson........Robert Redfield
never heard of him.
I liked The Simpsons description of Paint Your Wagon. Homer was expecting a Lee Marvin kill'em all movie. "Marge, make them stop doing all that fruity singing!"
The Shanghai Kid with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.
Jackie Chan: "My name is Chong Wang"
Wilson:"John Wayne? That's a terrible name for a cowboy!"
Rustler's Rahpsody, with Tom Berenger.

Geeze! AM I the only one who has seen and liked "Ride With the Devil"? Set in Civil War Missouri with Tobey Maguire and Jewel?
Others I'd buy:
Jeremiah Johnson
Last of the Mohicans (OK and Eastern, but it was West at the time :o)
Lonesome Dove
Little Big Man
Open Range
Unforgiven
Ulzana's Raid
Windwalker (OK a pre-frontier "western", but still "west" :o)
