My favorite time of the year. Unfortunately too much going on.
It is archery deer season now, got 4 tags! So next weeks plan: hunt wed thru sat. Wed will be deer and bear hunting with muzzleloading rifle (50 cal). Thursdy thru saturday will be bear hunting with rifle and doe deer huntting. (260 or 9.3). Ducks are in all week, but just not enough energy or time. Wish we could stretch the seasons throughout the year rather than cram them all together!

I agree with ya Bear. Bust our butt all summer to get ready for fall, to run around all fall trying to do it all!!

No doubt FALL is Best time of year. Agree it is too short of all the seasons! I enjoy pursuing Ruffed Grouse with Ryder my Irish Setter.
Ducks are great too but take more energy to get all gear/boat(s) ready. Also no longer have a partner which is part of duck hunting....the camaraderie. |

Agree IBD, grouse hunting is often best alone with a 4 legged friend.

Been following Irishsetter's & chasing ruffed grousefor past 47+ yrs. Had couple of Golden Retrievers simultaneously too. They were my duck dogs.

Dog....got a golden retriever that is scared of the stray cats and crunchy leaves. That count?
I love grouse, plain and simple. The flush, the stumbling through underbrush. The unbalanced wingshot whilst straddling a log and standing on moving twigs. The crisp mornings, and the screams of a fellow hunter stuck in the briars....nothing like it. Haven't made it out yet but I have the last half the week set aside to do so. For now I just listen....yup, listen. Seems we heard a thump outside the other morning and didn't figure out WTH it was until the end of the day. Old ruffy smacked into a window and offed itself. Found him laying next to the fuel tank when I was gathering up the yard tools. Those camo chickens are thick here and I aim to put a bunch in the freezer, but I aint picky about them. Ears are peeled for more freebies! Bear, you make it back from your hunt with any steam left come get ya some!

Grouse are way down from 50 years ago. I miss the fall drumming in the woods.
Expect to go, and limp a few miles...without a flush. But still fun. I had a black lab worked grouse great. Slow and close, with her nose making snorting noise when she was on one. she never did figure out how to retrieve a grouse...no splash?

For what ever reason grouse don't seam to have as much sent as like a Pheasant.
AND they will sit perfectly still even when a dog picks them up. We had a German short hair the would retrieve ducks and geese but not put them in her mouth. Only grab a wing feather and drag it to shore there it was up to us to get it. I have seen her get up on to a flock of sharptail and simply pick one up and bring it back to us fully alive and never spooked. Very funny to see her work them. She would lay down and point them to keep them from flying.
