There harder than a guy thinks!! I didn't make it out to our Sharpie place, short on time. I ran down to the river and tried our hands on Doves. We had to get a late start,9:00 and had to be home early 2:00. Were new at the dove thing and are still looking for the secret. I know there very tuff to hit and getting many just won't happen. I have shot at then enough to know that. I was wondering HOW to hunt them. We hunt public land and cant really use decoys. We don't have any sunflower Fields and trees are very scarce. A long the river there are scattered clumps of cottonwoods and Russian olives. with lots of chock cheery trees and brush. What we did is to walk the trees with one on each side of the trees and the same with the brushy Coulee. We flushed many birds but very often they would fly and we would not see them till they where 50 yards and moving fast. Most would fly to the next stand of brush or trees and hold up . Sounds like a good effort but the growth is 1/4 to 1/2 mile apart and makes for a lot of walking. We got two and lost four in the brush and couldn't find them. We also shot about 20 times ---each.Had a good time but was wondering how else we could hunt them ?? Here is some pics of the land we where hunting.

Just got back scouting for morning doves, for a Friday hunt. I think rule one is find were the doves are, can hunt them unless they're in the area. Doves fly in pretty set flyways. Watch were they are coming from and where they are going. I find 4 dove decoys (even if 1/8 inch plywood cut outs words great. I put them on fence wire or in a small branch I pick up. the close pin type decoys work good. Dead trees are like a magnet for doves between feedings. If the weather has been dry the pot holes are also good spots. Like geese, doves like small pebbles with their food. One of my best spots is an old sand quarry, they come in all day for grit. We can't hunt them until after 12 noon to sunset.
good luck. |

Well every one said I needed some decoys or I'd never get any doves so, I made some. I think they turned ok. I printed pictures on Vinyl then stuck the Vinyl on to Plastic poster board and covered it with clear Vinyl.

When I HAD to live in Tx.,,I learned 2 things about huntin' doves,,they were never where my shot ended up,,and if I bought a truckload of dove shells,,sold 'em for $1 over cost per box,(not case),,I would need 2 more truckloads and would not have to work the rest of the year!!!,,

D try and find a water hole away from the river, they water up in the evening before going to roost, dont feel bad theres a lot of shooters cant kill 10 dove with a box of shells.

Well It's over now. The season runs till Jan 1st but the temp dropped to 33* last night and all the doves went running ( Flying) south, wimps. I'll have to go till next year to see if I'm getting better with decoys.By then I should have my shotgun reloading stuff up. I should load some 12 gage 3 1/2" supper mags with #8 shot,NOW were talking !!!
