I have had a black lab and a red cocker spanial in the past. Both were good hunters and family pets. That said the little cocker became overly protective and this caused problems with strangers, both human and canine.

This spring I was offered a Weimeraner pup and as I have liked the looks of these dogs for over fifty years I ttok her in. She is showing good hunting instincts and is pointing wild birds on our "pretend" hunts. In a week I'll know how she will do in the real world. Last week she even caught a very young pheasant, likley less than a week old, after I flushed the hen. She seems to hunt close in, but one can't be too sure in such a young dog as she has yet to get a taste of blood.

Another breed that I have been very impressed with is the french pointer or Braque Francais. Smaller than an English pointer, close working and very in tune with its master. Thge ones I have seen do appear to be a bit timid around other dogs and strangers but are very conscious of the masters wishes.
