I don't think we beat this one around.  But As I think of retirement I start to think of getting another dog.  I've had setters, pointers, beagles, Brittany, Airedale and even a pug; and I'm sure I missed some (dachshund).

Don't think I can remember a dog I owned that I didn't like, so maybe the breed doesn't matter.

Well, what I'm thinking is a small dog that would be living in the house all the time, a great companion, easy to train (nice if it would just train me), and make some contribution to hunting.  Doesn't need to be the best hunting dog for everything (also had a GSH, and a Visala).  Companionship would be paramount.  NO long hair sheeding.

Thought maybe if everyone mentioned their idea a a best breed, I'd find something to thing about over the next year.

I have a couple of German Shorthairs. They are really cool to have around but they are a bundle of energy.

Thats Heidi. Pretty good hunter too.  I think I will always have one around. My wife might not think so but I think I will.

Bear;

Two come to mind, one with reservations.  Border Collie & another breed that's had hard times put upon it.  But, breed two doesn't shed, is supposedly quite intellligent & were originally bred as hunting dogs.  However, I don't think the breed's been hunted much in the U.S. for several decades.  Therefore, I'm not at all sure the dog would work for you.  Perhaps to search for information on "The Great Dog Dichotomy" or: Is there still such a thing as the hunting poodle?

I've got a English Springer Spaniel, and really like him. The only bad thing is he has seperation anxiety and chews every thing he sees. If you are going to be with him night and day, they are fine by themselves. If not get two. I am looking for another one, as mine is an outside dog. i tied makin him an inside dog, but he prefers it outside much better.

Bear I have had a gob of dogs,my Dad was a dog nut , I guess thats where it came from,if theres a dog somewhere needing a home I'll take it till I find it one.

All the dogs I've had were awesome buddies, great with the family. I belive it's all in the owner in the way a dog is raised. Any mammel thats treated and trained like crap will be crap, until it gets the right person to bring out it's best. All that being said I've got to have Labs,I love all dogs but labs will be with me till I can't have them any longer. All mine have been in the house and heck their cleaner than the kids.

Check out Lab Rescue's theres alot of good older dogs with great personalitys dying for a good home.

Bear we have German Shorthair Pointers and some of them are indeed in our  house. I have one laying on my bed as I type this post. It is in the breeding as to weather or not your going to be able to keep  a particular "GSP" in your home OK. I have a couple in the kennel that I would never think about having them inside the home.

They are line bred GSP's! They have more juice in them, than a hydro-electric plant. You just need to check out the breeding. We have a couple of started young dogs for sale too, if your interested in a bird dog for hunting upland game. I have 2 studs that are as gentle as a lamb around children or other dogs. This is the kind of dog we produce for foot hunters of upland birds. I have one stud that would be very comfortable running around Daytona's oval track! He is a bundle to hunt, more in line for those who field trial on horseback. His daddy is a 2 time national champion in the bred.

Some friends of mine have Britts, Springer's, Collies, Blue Heelers and Aussie Shepards  but then again you have the shedding problem and more hair to deal with on clothes and furniture. They are NOT as tuff a dog as the German Shorthair Pointer. They don't take scolding near as well and when conditions get real tuff they are not my cup of tea.

We hunt birds and enjoy watching them work in the field. I would make darn sure that you get to see both parents outside there kennel before buying any puppy, regardless of the bred of dog. Bear are you wanting a male or female dog? I will suggest to you the number one dog in the AKC registery and that is a Labradore Retriever.

They love to be played with in the parks are backyards (retrieveing) are excellent companions.....Not HIPPER as a general rule of thumb. They take cold weather very well and excell in the water. The Black Labs don't handle the sun in the summer as well as the Yellow Labs or Chocolate Labs. They are very easy around people and kids! Slower moving especially in your house or RV. They would be my pick if wanting a top companion type dog that likes affection too! They are some bredders who raise the Pointing Labs as well, in case you want to hunt upland birds in the future. They are a very tuff dog, even though they may not show any aggression, they are solid as a rock in most cases.  A great pick and one of my favorites too!

Remember the cheapest thing in owning a dog is the price of the puppy you purchase. The shots, food and other material things all cost the same, weather it is a well bred dog or not.

bear -

when discussing breeds, i am partial to german shorthaird pointers myself. ifg you want good information on dog breeds, as well as some advice on choosing one for your home, go to the website of the westminster kennel club. we watch their dog show every february, and they are very rich in information for someone looking for a dog for any purpose.

having said that, probably the best and most loyal dogs in the world come from your local shelter, and have no pedigree. my 2 cents is that a "plain, ol' mutt puppy" would be worth considering.

Mutts have value.  An I've had some great "pound puppies".

Only thing is the cute little "looks like a beagle pup" can turn into a "looks like you have a lab cross Dane".LOL

Still like to find companionship with "some" sporting traits.  I've had great beagles/rabbit dogs, a couple of good retrievers, one great bird dog (field champ) and an Airedale (never hunted lion with it).

I'd get a Brit if they just didn't shed like a rain storm.

bear- i say go back to the beagles. if size doesn't matter, then it is awfully tough to beat a lab or weimerainer for all things you mentioned as important.

cb... poodles can make good hunters, but the hunting poodles are typically pretty large dogs - certainly not the little yippy-bad-hairdo things we mostly associate w/ 'poodle'.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Dakotasin;

Yup Poodle, period.  Not toy, not teacup, not miniature, not nuthin' but either poodle or 'American standard'.  And I'd sure want to check out where it came from & what it's ancesters had done if I bought it as a hunting dog.

Bear, You may want to look at an American Water Spaniel. Small to medium sized, 45 pounds, smaller than a brit, dense curly coat, not the worst of shedders, excellent water dog, very good upland dog. I've hunted over three of them belonging to a friend. Great versatile dogs. Not easy to find. But definitly worth a look. RD

Rocky,

I've read on the AWS, very nice breed.  Do the burrs and briers stick in the coat??  I thought that their fur was sort of glossy?

I have a Small Munsterlander myself.  House dog and hunting dog.  He is a little large for the breed at 60 lbs.

Might want to look at some of the smaller spaniel breeds that still hunt.  Clumbers, Boykins, and the like.  Not so big, not so full of energy but still have good noses and can find some birds for you.

Beagles are the best dogs in the world. My beagle Titanic is the most personable dog in the world. He has been my hunting companion for 7 years now, and best part about beagles is that he will be able to be my hunting partner for another 10 years. Hell, my grandfather had a beagle who died at the age of 22 and hunted right up to age 21.

Bear, I don't think any dog is immune to burrs but I don't ever recall the water spaniels even remotely looking like a golden retriever in the burr department, The Water Spaniels have a very tight curly coat with a fine underfur. They do look almost shiny. See below. RD

PS. As a long time beagler, if they aren't curious enough to be stinky they aren't worth having!Wink

Sort of a rare breed in North America, but gaining in popularity.  Good house dogs and great hunting dogs.

Here are a couple of pics of my Tucker:

My French Brittany spends some time in the house and some time outside.  The shedding is helped somewhat by brushing her frequently.  She likes it, and it keeps the furniture from looking like Brittany fur.  Now if she would quit burying stuff under the couch cushions...
