I was raised tthat if you used a gun, when you finished it was to be cleaned like new.   But, every year I for some time, I take every gun I have (triple digits)and disassemble and clean bore, etc and lube.

Just finished today, and one of the benefits is I get to admired some beautiful  wooden stocks and the design/finish of some guns I don't see often.

That said I started at the 45 cal and worked down.  One of the last was a Cricket 22 rf.  these are fantastic scaled down 22s for kids.  Single shot, manual cocking, plastic stock.  But the design and finish is very good.  I think I paid $120 for it about 4 years ago NIB.

best thing about this is the kid stock...it reallt fits so there is no crawling across the stock.   A nice first gun for a son/daughter or grand kids.

Bought a wood 🦗 20 years ago just before the birth of my first kid. Put the factory cricket 4x scope on it too.

The kids outgrew it quicker than I expected. In the end I have shot it much more than they ever did. The slow single shot loading wasn’t fast enough to hold their interest. They much preferred lever actions and semiautomatics. My only complaint is one the kids never had. The loading is easy enough with small kid fingers but adult size fingers have a tight fit and make it nearly impossible to load prone since you really need a gravity assist with the muzzle down to help insert the cartridge if you can’t get your fingers in the breech.
It makes a good truck/car gun, fits in a pack too.

I wish I'd have had it when trapping.  perfect.

Right they are sized for small kids (kids outgrew it quicker than I expected).  Maybe get 1 year at best.  My grandson will be 13 when/if he ever gets back to USA.....too big for it.  I do have a very small 6 yr old GD, maybe in 3 years????   mean time it is cleaned and oiled.

I got one for my oldest granddaughter right after I heard her mom was expecting. It has a blue laminate stock. My plan was to trade her out of it when she outgrew it and give it to the next grandkid.

It's on the third grandkid now. I'll be trading him out of it in about a year. The thing with him is, he doesn't seem to be too excited about hunting. That makes the decision of what to get him next harder.

Get him an AR or at least a 10/22.
A hole bunch of ammo and some empty pop cans.
After blasting a few 100 rounds he will be hooked on shooting at least.Clap

Bear,
I too just purchased a rifle for my grandson.  His name is Henry, after my dad.   So I thought a special rifle would be appropriate.  The Henry Golden Boy, 22LR has the following engraving-----  Henry Lizotte, This is my gift to you for your 2nd Christmas,  Grandpa Jim

Bear,
My grandson will be 2 years old in 3 weeks.    A friend said to wait until he's 10 at least.  I said I would be 86 by then, if I lived that long.  My granddaughter is 5.  I've bought both of them Daisy Red Ryder's.

"A friend said to wait until he's 10"

He can be hunting deer at 10 and using a 30/06.

I think age isn't the measure, it is maturity.  Some 12 year olds should not be near guns.

My state is 12 years old.  I've taught over 1,000 kids in NRA Hunter Safety courses.  Only failed one, had a few that I had to talk to parents about EXTRA caustion.

I bougth my son a ruger Number 1 with XXXX wood in 7x57 the day he was born!  It is a bicentenial model and the prettiest gun in my safe.  He  like his 30-30 Marlin better.   BUT...Buying it back then was a dream and it made me very happy.

I really like the idea of having something engraved on a gun for a grandkid.

Thanks for the suggestion D. I'm thinking that a 10-22 would be perfect. Then like Bear said we could go out and shoot close up prairie dogs until he gets old enough to move up into a centerfire.

I might just make a hunter out of that kid yet.

when my son was younger (30+ years ago), I'd get some 6" balloons and blow them up.  with just a little wind they blow and bounce down range.  hitting a moving target is mor fun than a paper Taget.

I got lots of shooting ideas....just need a grandchild closer than 4,000 miles!!!!

Anything reactive kept my kids attention longer than shooting at paper. We set up clay pigeons on the side of a dirt hill.

I like the balloon idea.
