The first fur traders that pushed west had a transportation problem. It was solved by the liberal use of the birch bark canoe. These craft were very sophisticated and made the trading of furs a profitable business.

This image shows the different sizes that were used.

 

The '5 Fathom Canoe' is, of course, 30 feet long. A fathom being 6 feet.

Here is the Ma' tre Canot (36 feet long) 'running the rapids'. Note the clothing of these voyageurs, there's not a lot of leather.

Speaking of canoes, have they ever found the remains of the steel "some assembly required" canoe the Louis and Clark had near Great Falls? Too bad they couldn't have found a way to make it work.

Stupid people are like a slinky, they don't serve much purpose in the world but they sure are fun to watch tumble down the stairs!

it hasn't been found. some scholars have suggested that it was dug up and taken back, or possibly cannibalized by the blacksmith for other stuff.....
