DD, "Hi everyone my name is Deaddog"

Group,  "Hi Deaddog"

DD, "It's been three days since I last casted"

Group, Some stifled applause and head nodding.

It's an evil insidious disease. You start out as a casual user of lead, things quickly get out of hand. You start buying molds, bullet lubes, tin,top punches, sizer dies, a lube sizer, a bottom pour melting pot, mold handles, ingot molds, a turkey fryer burner, LP gas, leather gloves, mold release, gas checks, etc. But that's just for one caliber. Soon that doesn't "do it" for you and you want, you need more. You start stopping at small town auto repair shops. You ask if they have any wheel weights they'd like to get rid of. The greasy old mechanic looks at you and can tell by the way you're shaking that you need a fix and says "sorry a guy was just here the other day and I gave him a full five gallon pail of them"...

Just say no.

deaddog, I can see right through this charade. Convince others of the addictive qualities so they'll stay away and you'll get more ww etc. for yourself. Well your little trick won't work with me. I've been casting now for about 6 months and feel no need to grovel in the dirt for wheel weights etc. I just switched mechanics because my new one gives me all his wheel weights. I've only got a half dozen friends that save peanut butter jars for bullet storage for me. My mailman's hernia wasn't my fault either. He should know that large flat rate boxes weigh up to 80 pounds. I don't even hold on to all the molds I've purchased at garage sales and on e-bay. I just trade them for tin etc. The only molds I'm holding on to that I don't have guns for have antique value. The bullets that I carry in my pocket on a daily basis are in there for polishing not for displaying to like minded friends while fishing for compliments about my handiwork. You aren't fooling anybody playing like this is addicting. Rockydog

RD exhibits classic denial. I fear he's hooked.

If ya don't have at least 1000 pounds of lead, WWs and cast projies, then you may not have become fully addicted.

Keep going, it is fun!!

Hello, My Name is IBD.......I don't even know what addiction means...and my story will prove it.....
..........My bullet casting began very casually back in the early 1970's......One 2nd hand bullet mold, second hand 10lb size cast iron melting pot & lead dipper/pourer, some WW's (scrounged), Lyman Cast Bullet Book & lubrisizer & die & toppunch.....I was off to the races..er range.....oh, heat source was my Coleman 2 burner campstove.   Handguns only, well only one handgun is better put.  Then another handgun size..then a Lee bottom pour electric pot.....scrounging lead (anywhere I could was a priority) & lots of it too, from lead water lines, ww's, linotype (used for printing presses for you pups out there), "atomic" lead from the local x-ray dept etc...note I am still not addicted, cuz I could quit anytime I felt like or when the pot ran dry.
..........Things went along rather well for a few yrs.  Whoa there........ now came long range shooting with the 45-70 BP rifles...more boolits (read molds), needed and bigger too.  Somewheres the M/L came along to consume round lead balls....more molds...
.........Fast forward early 1990's and along came CowBoy Action requiring ammo w/lead boolits...lots of boolits..every month.....much work with only 1 cavity mold, along comes 2 cavity mold....still much work...found a source of good lead bullets only 15 miles down the road..& very good price/M.....set aside the casting gear...life was good.....10 yrs later the old guy retires from casting boolits, sells stuff to guy from TX & leaves me high and dry.  Supply running low found new caster guy, he up and moves out of the area....dig up old casting stuff and back at it again....a shooter needs new balls ever so often...and boolits too....BUT as you can see I was able to quit when I wanted too....so I ain't addicted!

My latest lead source has absolutely nothing to do with a casting addiction but it is a bit, shall we say, compulsive. I scan the newspapers for the dates and locations of the various county democratic party caucuses. I've worn out several pairs of pants and one screwdriver crawling from car to car in the dark and collecting wheelweights. Damnedest thing though. All of my guns now seem to shoot to the left. RD

actually Bear that is a good thought....Boolit casters...make sure you have adequate ventilation from the lead fumes when casting.  Very important.  I have my set up in one of my outbuildings and leave the OH door open when casting for lots of fresh air/movement.

IBD, I doubt that most of us would even think of casting in the Out House let alone leaving the door open while we do so. Hope you've got a good stout leather apron and a south facing location. BRRR

RD,RD,RD.....read my lips...er...words.....outbuildings....NOT outhouse....you certainly should be aware that we in WI are prohibited from using any outhouse for such activities.......local fire regulations specifically prohibit, in outhouses, (and in particular those of multiple seating capacity) the use of a high heat source (casting pot) in a highly gaseous & odiferous noxious atmosphere which could lead to a gas ignited explosion that might cause the neighbors some concerns (if you have any close 'nuff to notice) & the user even more concerns.
