HUMMM!!!
In my mind if I cant take my 8mm I have to say. d4570 = Marlin CB 10 shot 300 gr 2450 fps. Most anything I bet, any AR so you can shoot a LOT of them, 350 legend, 450 BM would top my list.

I shot one a couple years ago with a .308. It died right where I shot it.
I'm thinking, for me anyway, it depends on the distance. Inside 100 yards I would like to use a 30-30. Longer distances I'm thinking .308.

Well, RCBS came thru with a free replacement for my 348 win dies. So, when we get this together, the Winchester model 71 in 348 will be my 'short' rifle.

I've killed them with 6.5-08, 12 ga, 308, 8mm.375 and handguns.
With head shots a 100 gr will do (243/257. On heart lung shots you need more bullet weight as they have a shoulder shield that will stop soft/light bullets. you can get a heart/lung shot in, but it is often half covered by that shield and thick pigskin (plus a layer of dried mud). wild hogs come in all colors, black, brown, gray, mottled, also pink and white. And they roll in mud daily. This means your black crosshair will be on a black background, just like shooting black bears. Lighted reticles are nice. I hunt early morning and evening, and have used a red dot, but prefer regular x=hairs. just thoughts.

As a note, most places will not let you use 223 as these are not capable of clean kills. some small fenced areas will reluctantly allow them if a dude insists, because they know that they will have only a small area like 10 acres to chase the wounded animal. 223 isn't even good for head shots.
Also note buckshot is a very poor choice, lack any significant penetration over 25 yards; foster slugs do fine. I've dressed out many a hog, found lots of nicely mushroomed 223 bullets, some FMJs. Along with 30 cal mushrooms from 30-30. Interesting thing is I often find 22 lr also mushroomed. many of these fall out as hog is skinned. If you have a 35 remington with a 1-2 poeer scope it is pretty good on body shots. I had used my 375 win Marlin, but sold it as it was just a 4 inch group at 100 yds, not accurate enough for my deer hunting. Whatever you use, be sure it has a 'stout' bullet. Partitions are bad as are most plastic tips. Core-loch, power points seem to work fine. Sorry, plastic tips are OK IF you only take head shots. Whatever gun you pick, it should stack the deck in your favor. PS my thoughts are to wild feral or russian hogs, not peccary/havalena. they are MUCH smaller and not as armored.

Thanks for the information Bear.
What do you think about a .308 with a 165 grain Sierra Pro Hunter? That's what I used and it worked well but my shot was about 25 to 30 yards and a head shot.

my guess would be for whatever caliber (rifle or handgun) you choose to use make it as heavy a boolet that caliber that will stay together to allow for Penetration!
