Try freshwater eel's. The little baby ones, whole, work the best, but a chunked up big one will work too.

We usually use crawlers, but anything with a strong scent will usually work. I've seen a few caught with cheese curds, dead minnows, cheetos, corn, and many other nasty smelling home brews. Most of the home made stuff incorporates ground 'guts n blood' with other misc fillers. Basically, they suck crap off the bottom, almost too literally, so a lot of leftover food items will work.

Stupid people are like a slinky, they don't serve much purpose in the world but they sure are fun to watch tumble down the stairs!

Well, when I was still on the farm back east, granddad had his favorite. When we would castrate pigs, he would save a coffee can full of pig nuts, and set them on top of the hog shed in the sun for a week or so. When he went fishing, they had some AUTHORITY! And they definitely caught a lot of fish. If you could stand to put them on a hook!
Another thing that was used the same way, was chicken chitlens. They wouyld take aboutthree days in the sun, after that it was hard to keep them on the hook.
When I was working in a welding plant along the Cedar River, just across from the Quaker Oats plant in Iowa, we made our own hooks in the shop. They were big! We would bait them with a whole chicken, and used parachute cord for line. 100# catfish were common. We'd tie the line to the forklift during breaks, and haul them in.
Something a lot of people don't know, if you are in good catfish water, Mepps spinners work darn good for cat up to about five pounds or so.

A 4-6" black perch is mean bait for the big flats but you better have the terminal gear to hold them, I have lost many a good fish to the cheap little swivels sold at wal mart and K mart
