Well it took 5 days...but here is our bear! First confirmed sighting, with hard evidence, that there is a bear here on Maple Hill in my lifetime. I am keeping it on the down low here locally, I don't need every self proclaimed bear expert hanging a stand within 50yds of my spot. My guess is a 3yr old 160lbs to maybe 200, but not over that. For reference, the bait bucket is one of the big horse feed buckets from TSC, 72qts IIRC. This is a screenshot of the video. He was there from 9pm 11/13 until 6am 11/15, disappearing during the daylight hours. We re-baited today and hopefully he makes a habit of hanging around. No hits on the other bait yet.

He was back last night for several hours. Looks like he might make it a habit. Hoping to get one coming to the other bait site. Gonna set a couple more with my Uncle on our family wood lot this week.
D, if we had a normal bear season I would feel confident in getting one. But, with the laws like they are, it's far from a sure thing. Just hoping I can find the goods needed to keep him coming in without spending a small fortune!! |

Ever try talking with a local grocery store?
Our neighbor hood Albertsons/Safeway. Tosses hundreds of pounds of bakery and produce stuff a day.

Bears here do scratch trees. Reach high as they can and then scrape nails/claws down. they make perminent scars. It gives us an indication of the size of the bears. Lots of oaks marked.
I've never seen them lick those scrapes. Nor Have I ever hear of that. I have seen them lick wild cherry trees, that seem to weep sap, also apple trees, the older ones.

Forget donuts, use fruit and starches. Even canned veggies work. Hit up the local crash and dent stores or grocery stores. Even food banks have them. The gallon size cans dented are impossible to sell so they give them away. You can get a bear to stay around even longer with a gallon of peanut butter. They will sit and lick for hours! Throw in some wrinkled apples and a water bucket, they will never leave!

That's exciting Maplehill
I have a buddy that gets the old donuts from a couple grocery stores. He did say he goes in early to ask for them because other bear hunters are there wanting them. Wing master

A trapping group that I use to belong to was group buying 55 gallon drums of peanut butter!
One place I hunt bears at buys 18 wheeler loads of sugar ceral. He built a special steel bulding 70 foot long...filled with the stuff. Bears aren't picky. One guy takes and freezes all the fish heads and guts for the year in plastic buckets, then evey day puts a frozen glob out for his baits. Makes my sardine lunch smell good!

And then there were 2! This is the other bait site, maybe 1/2mi away from the first. Looking back at all the videos of the first site I think these 2 were there as well, just not together like here. Who knows how many are here.

They are boars, you can see their equipment in the videos, but I agree that they are 3yrs old. My cousins son said he saw a sow and 2 cubs about 2 or 3yrs ago while bow hunting, could be these 2 grown up, who knows. I know the bear population in much of the state has exploded the last 4-5yrs. We have excellent bear habitat here so it was just a matter of time before they showed up.

Interesting, boars seldom hang out together after 2 years old. They are usually singular, and competitive. Female sisters often will hang together till one gets pregnant.
Either way two tasty freezers full.

I thought it was kind of odd as well, but I'm no expert and there is no question they are boys. They were both there again last night facing off and scuffling. I think there is a 3rd one coming around. He is more reluctant to open up the bait bucket. They are so hard to tell apart but I think the more I watch the more I will see differences. Of the 2 together one has rubs on both of his hips that are easy to see. |

I'm second guessing that they are just 2 year olds, being 2 boys!
You might want to take a piece of 1/2" plastic pipe 48" long Cut a diagonal on one end to be driven 6" into the ground Put it about 6 foot from the barrel with a black ring around it at 36" above ground. Then your pics will have a back height standard gage.
