any other 28 gaugers around??

I've been shopping around for one for quite awhile. The probem is the El Cheapo Mossberg Silver Reserve and the like don't fit me and I can't bare to hand over the $$ for a Ruger Red, the only one I've found that pulls up for me.

I hunted for a 1100 in 28 for years. I finally found one, a Tournament Skeet NIB. Still haven't been able to bring myself to shoot it.

I had a Stoger SxS 28 ga, but I couldn't hit with it and got rid of it and bought the O/U Baikal. It is choked MOD over I/C and is a dandy quail gun.

The Baikal is now the Remington SP310, has a silver reciever and comes with 4 chokes (CYL, I/C, MOD & Full) for 399.00 at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Although I love the 28 ga, the cost of shells made me go buy one of the Remington SP310's in 20 ga.

I think that some if not all of the 28 ga's reputation comes from the ammo more than the bore size. 28 ga ammo has almost ALWAYS been premium ammo and expensive. Not only that, but most 28 ga owners have substantial experiance BEFORE they move to the 28 ga.

In theory, any shot load will be best when fired from the largest bore available. The taller the shot colum, the longer the shot string and the more likely to have damaged or deformed shot. The 20 ga should in theory be a shade better with any load than the 28 ga, and a 16 or 12 ga should be even better. The larger bore produces a thinner (shorter) shot string where a 410 might APPEAR to pattern well, but might be long enough to allow a bird to fly thru unhit. It was a LONG time before I understood this. I started my son off with a cut down H&R 12 ga with shells cut down to 2 1/2 inches using 1/2 oz loads. I developed them myself from information I read over the years about reusing worn out hulls. The cut down barrel (cylinder bore) combined with the light recoiling loads allowed him to hit well (20/25) on his FIRST try ever with gently thrown clays. Nothing builds confidence like sucess (he hit the first 10 before he missed).

Having said all that, I wish I still had the little SxS Stoger, and I still love the Baikal 28 ga. I wish I had the guts to shoot the Remington. Is is a pretty little thing and I bet it would handle and shoot like a dream.

I got a 28 gauge Remington 1100 Tournament Skeet and a MEC grabber reloader with a 1/2 case of remington cases and some wads that I hardly use any more.  PM me if your interested.

I also use a 28 Gauge. Mine is a Ceasar Guerini Magnus Grouse, with 26 inch barrels. I would have preferred 30 inch barrels for this sub gauge. The short barrels and light weight make it more difficult to control. Shooting well with it is an excercise in perfection of gun mount and accurate pointing.

Lovely little gun. I use it on skeet and close in sporting clays. Out to 35 yards I do fine with it. My best performance is with Cylinder and improved cylinder for 20-25 yard shooting on clays with #8 shot. Use Game Bore or Kent 3/4 ounce loads.

I have shot planted pheasants and chuckars with the #7.5 loading of 3/4 ounce. I know there is a 1 ounce load available.The 3/4 oz. load is fine on birds out to 35 or so yards with the modified/improved modified choke combo

 my gun weighs 5 pounds 10 oz., I match the load to the gun. The 1 oz load is too much for this light gun.
