well, fellas... my 2nd, and last, sightron survived about 25 shots on my 257 roberts... my first sightron was shot apart in about twice as many shots... at least they have a good warranty.

thinking along the lines of replacement scopes now - since the sightron will be nib when i sell it, it should make any scope purchase not too painful... i haven't busted a bushnell (limited experience), nikon (a good amount of experience), or leupold (lots much experience)...

should i go for something new (bushnell)? tried and true (leupold)? or something in between (nikon)?

Bushnell and Leupold have been the only totally trouble-free scopes I've owned.

Lots of scope companies have the same names but have changed ownership, ie Weaver, Redfield, et al.  They are now junk.  Sightron and others make some models in USA or Japan, but mix parts and often sneak in a Taiwan, Philippines, or china model.

Dakotasin-- Are you saying the wicked recoil on a 257 Roberts is destroying the Sightron scopes?  WOW  Even the 340 with 400 grain full loads doesn't destroy the Leupolds or Bushys???

My roberts is a 1977 Ruger and has thousands of rounds, and if memory serves me correct it has worn a 3-9 Bushnell, 2-7 Leupold and a 3-9 leupold.  No problems

dakota -

sorry to find that the sightron didn't work well for you. mine's always been great but i will admit that a bad experience will screw it up for a company.

well, the first one blew apart on the ar-15 - but i am much more forgiving about that because i think the dual direction recoil impulse is a bit harder on scopes than a bolt gun. for the record, the ar has eaten a sightron and a cabela's alaskan guide.

bad experience... eh, i'm a little more tolerating than most, but this sightron had enough downsides that i decided to move on. the short lifespan (2 dozen shots through a 9.5 pound 257 roberts shooting 100 grain pills at 3000 f/s), the very sloppy turrets, and the winking sight picture kinda teamed up and made me move on. oh well - its the way it goes sometimes.

probably go bushnell. its the direction i'm leaning at the moment. i still think leupold has passed a point in price that i'm willing to pay for the level of quality. unfortunately, sightron is priced right w/ leupold but lacking in quality. so, is there a viable alternative to leupold that is not zeiss, or that does not cost 3-4 times as much? dunno... let's see what bushnell can do for me...

I have had real good luck with the Bushnell Elites. In fact, I only have a few rifles that aren't wearing them, those three are wearing a new Simmons, a Bushnell non Elite series, and a Older Nikon on the .280. Since the Elite Series seem to be quite a bit brighter than the older Nikon (10 years old), I may upgrade to a new Elite Scope soon for it.

I think the 4200 Elite series from Bushnell are very good scopes and worth the $$.

A non Elite bushnell sits atop my wifes Ruger .257 Roberts, where it has been for about twentyfive years. Never had a problem with it in all that time and i dont expect any in the future. I think that says a lot for Bushnell quality.......I cant speak to any scope made in China cause i dont own any. For the type of hunting i do, i wont buy anything but a Bushnell Elite.   Just my 2 cents worth.

Tikka said Burris and I maintain that for the money a FF2 is a tough one to beat.  Of course I bought the old FF2, sans Phillipino mfring.

I'm looking at the Signature Select Burris for my 338 Win. Mag. which is about the middle of the road for Burris - not a Black Diamond, nor a FF2.

Haven't decided on standard plex or the BDC reticle though.

Moutaineer;

Don't put it in Burris mounts!  I did that with my .338 Winchester magnum & they could not hold against the recoil.  I went to Talley & all the problems went away.

Now, I'm not buying anything at all that say Burris on it.  That one was the last straw.  The Zeiss scope in the Talley rings is doing a wonderful job.
