over the past couple of years, i've been accumulating a few things here and there against the day whn i might be able to take up the pursuit of tying flies. i did an inventory today and it seems i am doing pretty well with tools and materials of fair (neither great nor bad) quality.

tools

  • adjustable vise with rotating head
  • open-frame bobbin
  • english-style hackle pliers
  • whip-finish tool
  • bodkin/dubbing needle
  • wax

it looks like i still need:

  • "good" scissors
  • bobbin threader
  • hair stacker
  • hackle gauge

there might be a few other odds-and-ends, but i figure this will get me started where tools are concerned. as far as materials go, i have a decent "beginner's selection:"

  • red, black and brown fly-tying thread
  • medium and fine tinsel (slver and gold, respectively)
  • wax
  • assorted fly-tying hooks
  • various quills, hackles, bucktails, peacock herl, chenilles, dubbing, fur (rabbit and muskrat) and deer body hair

a couple of things i definitely need to get are:

  • white waxed floss/thread
  • head cement

like the tools, there are probably a few other things i need, but i seem to be over halfway there....

If anyone hunts wood duck (Aix sponsa) take the feathers from below the wing on the body cause many natural dry fly patterns call for wood duck feathers.
