I am planning on using a 30-06 for elk this year. The rifle I'm going to use hasn't been shot much and I haven't worked on a load for it.

I loaded 5 different charge weights of H4350 and went out and shot them. The best group was just over 1 1/2 inches. I was thinking I'd load a few more with the bullets seated a little deeper and see if it gets better.

Is this accurate enough for elk? I think realistically I won't be shooting more than 300 yards but you never know what could happen.

I think it would be fine.  Most people in the field can't hold 1.5 inches.

But you still have time to 'play around some' while also getting some trigger time with the new rifle.

I usually get best accuracy when the bullet is seated out more that the book OAL.  what bullet weight are you using?

So, at what distance was the 1 1/2" grouping? Remember the "group" just keeps getting "bigger" the farther out you hit the target, and the kill zone on an elk is what???? IF you think you can stay in the kill zone with that load and your longest distance than you could be good to go with that load.  However, a little tweaking of the load can't hurt if you have the time.

I loaded 180 grain Sierra Gamekings that are .010 from the lands.

The groups were shot at 100 yards.

I didn't chrono the loads but according to the Sierra manual they should be going 2600 FPS.

I'm not exactly sure but I have always thought the kill zone on an elk is about 18 inches. Next time I'm at the range I'll shoot the same load at 200 yards. That's the longest distance I can shoot at the range that's close to my house.

I'm thinking that I should be able to keep them in 18 inches from a bench but when you add in quartering angles, buck fever, up hill, down hill, general field conditions I'm not sure but That is a pretty big target.

Keep us posted on your results WM at the extended range. If you can find a ballistic program online you might be able to get some info on how your load might perform at extended yardages beyond 100yd base.

I'll do that. I have time to do some load testing but like every other summer it gets away before I get everything done that I set out to do.

My more accurate loads are with about .005 from the lands.

About 2" high at 200 yards should keep you inside elk at 300 yards

Thanks Bear. That's what I'll do. 2' high at 200.  Maybe I should try a few closer to the lands.
