IMHO, if your're thinking of the .410 for a kid?  Do the kid a favor, forget it.  The combo you want is: .22lr/20 guage.  Savage made, or makes, that as well.  Rossi makes a switch-barrel single shot platform nowadays too.  I do believe the Rossi sells for quite a bit less money than the Savage combo guns do also. 

The .410 is an expert's shotgun, not a kid's gun.  Missing is not positive reinforcement.  The 20's are not kickers, I know.  I started shooting a 20 at about age 9, & I loved it.

CB, I agree with you about kids and .410s. But I've got to disagree about 20 guages not being kickers. I've seen a lot of parents buy their kids a 20 H&R or Rossi and a box of cheap promo loads and have seen the look on the kids face when they touched it off. If you've got a gung ho, hard core hunting with dad since he could toddle kid, you'll be alright. But if you've got a kid who dad is trying to push a little or is timid at all you'll send them scampering. These guns are too light and the damn promo loads are way to hot for beginners. If the light gun is used there are the some managed recoil AA loads out there that really work well for starting kids, along with similar reloads. In fact if the kid is big enough the 12 Guage AA reduced loads actually provide less recoil than 20 guage guns due to gun weight. The weight advantage of the 20 guage/.22 double gun will soften the recoil enough that it probably wouldn't be a factor. Also had a buddy buy his daughter an 1100 Rem 20 guage youth auto which really takes the bite out too.

By the way, I started out at 10 with a plastic stocked Stevens 12 Guage side bolt, it didn't kick either. I loaded her with 2 3/4 inch #2s for fox hunting. I've still got it but somehow, over the years that thing has turned into the most brutal shotgun I've ever owned. I know it's all in my head. Either youthful ignorance or fading memory.  RD

Savage 24 is nice. Would like to have one in .22 mag. over 12 or 20. Used
price up here is upwards of $350.00. There may be a 30/30 over 12 GA. still
on the shelf. Seldom do they show up in the used market.

I've used this method on some seriously rusted relics, and it works well, without damaging the good metal. Only removes rust.

I purchased the Rossi 20/22lr for my son two years ago, when he was almost 10.  The 22 is great and pretty accurate all considered.  But it is a VERY light little gun, therefore the 20 guage barrel packs a considerable kick.  At first he'd only shoot maybe 10 rds. before hanging it up.  He's gotten bigger and more accustomed to it now so it doesn't bother him.  In researching Rossi's website, they plan to begin a barrel exchange program then there will be a .308 barrel available as well as various other centerfire caliber's.
