Packing for deer opening day, Sat.

Taking two rifles:
kimber 8400 classic select 7 mag (thanks to wing0
Rem 700 300 Rum syn stock (my wet weather rifle).

Obviously, both are more than needed for Pennsylvania wood mountain ridge areas!   But, it occurred to me that both have 26" barrels.  I usually prefer 22 inch tubes for hunting.  But, these two magnums really NEED a long barrel to get up to speed.  and longer gun  cases

Back in early 60s I saw lots of guys with 26" barrels on even 30-06.  One buddy had an '06 with a med heavy bbl on his '06, and always said  "it helped me swing smoothly"??

Do any of you folks carry 26" bbl on your hunting rifles?  or is it a thing of the past.

I don't think I have a rifle with a 26 inch barrel. several with 24 inchers. I also don't have any magnums so I don't see that much benefit to having a 26 inch barrel.

Weather was super cold, so I hunted the wood sock 7 mag.  With the weight of the wood and its 26 inch barrel, my 2+ miles a day hunting in the mountains, was tiring.  Oftn thought of my 5.5 # Kimber!!!Smile

Is it global warming that caused that? I knew it was happening but I didn't know why.

Global warming is causing my hair to turn gray too.

If I can't get it done with a 24 then I don't need it...with that said I do have a couple with 26" tubes. One is my Pre 64 300H&H the other is a custom Rem 700 in 7mm Wby. The 7Wby is an absolute laser, I took it to Jim Hart to see if he could shorten it for me, it's fluted, he talked me out of it..."you don't mess with accurate rifles" Noted Jim...

That's a good point about messing with an accurate rifle.
