I was just curious where most of you shoot at?  The only official range i have been able to come up with is about 65 miles away from my house and only has  100 and 200 yd targets. I have permission to shoot at a local farmers place but with 3 kids (13 yrs,8 yrs and 15 months) it seems like the only time i have to shoot is early in the morning on weekends and i hate to wake him or worse some of his neighbors at 6:30 on a sunday morning to the sound of my shooting and lose this spot. I have looked on the interntet and talked to most local gun stores/sporting goods shops and their arent a lot of ranges around here.  Do you all have private ranges or belong to local clubs?

Each state is different, some will run ranges (Missouri), others don't (Kansas).  Mostly private clubs have ranges, I belong to 3 although I don't usually renew my membership on the one I don't intend to shoot that year.  I really lucky, or should I say my wife didn't notice where we bought our house I'm withing 2 miles of the club that has the trap/skeet/clays and 100yard rifle/pistol range.  Second range is simply luck. It's a 300 yd range that was donated to a local group by Mr. Hogdon (from Hogdon powders).  They shoot High Power their, initiation price is a bit high but yearly fee's are cheap.  3 one's a mom and pop shotgun outfit, Ok place, and Great folks.

i shoot on the farm. i have a 200 yard range in a ditch w/ shelter belts on both sides so even if there is some wind, me, my targets, and my bullets are protected.

when i need to shoot further, i go to my uncle's farm. the possibility is there for me to practice at any range i see fit, out to 1.5 miles.

if a local farmer has given you permission, might take him up on it a couple of times and then ask him if they could hear the gunfire in the house. chances are very slim that they would hear you.

one of the benefits of living in a rural state w/ a low population is that it is assumed that you have ready access to a place to shoot - the need for quality ranges w/ targets out to 1000 yards is unrecognized.

there was a very nice range by mitchell w/ benches set up out to 500 yards. very well kept, huge berms surrounded the range on 3 sides...but, it got closed due to stupid people (people shooting over the berms, general vandalism by the members, etc).

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Where i shoot, the longest shot is probably 50 yards. It is a sand pit. There is a range pretty close by, but my dad just hasnt had time to get a membership there. I also barely ever get to go shooting, so when i do, i dont complain about where we shoot.

NH_Hunter

BTW: As soon as we move to a less populated area, i am going to setup a shooting range in the back yard. I cant do that where i currently am because i am in town and my backyard is a 1 foot strip of grass behind the house that is completely covered in dog poop.

I've got 5 ranges that I know of within 25 miles, and one as close as 5 miles.
They all have different policies aand some are not worth the hassle. One range has a rule
that you can not pick up ANY brass, including your own. I don't deal with them...ever.
One charges $10 per gun, damned expensive if you are a shooter vs a hunter just checking one gun.
I also have property in another county where I can shoot. Have a nice clay pit with shear walls that
make a good backstop.
Even in a city of over a million, there are many choices regarding shooting.

i have 3 places to shoot. the club we belong to has a 100 yd back stop for rifles and 2 time a year they hold a 200 yd shoot. the big thing at the club is they have started a new e.p.a. thing where they want to know how many shots and what gr. you are shooting. so they can see how much lead you are putting into the enviroment? they say it is volintery right now. this is about 9 miles away. we also go to a club that has a 200 yds range. but that 1 is 25 miles out. so when we go for a shoot up there we take everything we want to shoot.  we have an informal range down the road at a farmers field.  it has a 110 yd backstop and across the ditch there is a 275 yd.  this 1 is half a mile down the rd. it also has a old hen house that has a bench in it with a heater so we can shoot all winter.we stay warm and have the kids set targets. the shooting dosent bother anybody.sometimes when we do shoot down there some of the neighbor come down to shoot also. its fun to get a few people to have alittle match going.

I've got an old business desk set up on the edge oa a field right under a tree that is on top of a small hil. I've got dirt berms with a target board set up at 100 and 200 yards, very little downward angle. I also have a 300 yard target that goes from the bench downhill and back up and is slightly higher, but that valley causes some weird wind drifts at times. I've got some cement blocks and a 2x12 set up with a bunch of powerade bottles on top. I was shooting my .22 at the bottles and hit the 2x12, saw the splinters fly, I could see the bullet most of the way! Couldn't tell where the heck it was actually landing most of the time.

I also have 8 or so trap/skeet ranges within 20 miles, and three rifle ranges, only 100 yrads though. Trap/skeet are the only get togethers, the ranges don't do anything, so I stay at home.

Hey NH, aside from the future possibilities of more land, if you never shoot at long range, or hunt over 75, why such an interest in big guns? I know, I knowm, they're cool! I think you would have a lot of fun if you got a nice .22 centerfire, .223 preferably, and do you have a .22? How about a nice bb bun? If not, you don't know what you are missing. It is nice to be able to hit something with a big rifle with no drop, but a .22 shots with a drop like a rock, and it adds a little more shot to shot challenge, especially out to 300 yards! Just curious.

Morning SDLOU  >>  MT's pretty cool as far as shooting possibilities go.  If you don't own the land, you certainly need some contacts, but there's a 1000 yd. range just about any place you take the time to set one up at  ;o)  .  Got 500 yds. behind the home of a close hunting partner that gets most of my load development work.  Our extreme range work is done at a 1000 yd. range set up on some flat range land a bit farther up the valley.  With these free ranges at our disposal, organized ranges don't interest me all that much.  I don't like shooting from benches all that much anyway.  I've never found one that fit.  They're fine for light recoil stuff, but folding myself over something on the bench that has a kick to it just ain't all that much fun.  At our ranges we shoot on solid benches worked into our truck beds.  I much prefer shooting from bags, standing then sitting.  I find this a lot more comfortable simply because of the position behind the gun.  I do have membership at one small range just up the road from me a jump, but only being 100 yds., it's just used to fireform cases, check zeros, test out prospective rifle purchases; minor stuff like that.  Later.  >>  klallen

I feel fortunate to have a very nice range in my area. The club has done a nice job and it's only 30 bucks a year. There are three ranges, one hundred yard, pistol range and a 200 and 300 yard range. They are all covered and have decent benches.

While I have a small range set up at our place I still go to the gun club we belong to.  Reasons are great marked ranges out to 1000 yards and great company with fellow members as no one likes to shoot alone.  Lawdog

I joined a local gunclub about 4 miles from my home. Great venue. Fully covered shooting points for those rainy, wet British Columbia coastal winters. Pistol bay has 50 yard range with automated target system. Put up your target on the shooting line, dial in the range, target goes out to that point, bring it back when you're finished. The rifle range is only 100 yards though. Perfect for testing loads, though.

I also belong to another gun club with a rural rural range [about 20 miles away]. Bit of a drive but can shoot rifle 200-300 yards.

Marcus.

I have a hundred yard benchrest range here at home, and pistol range. Our club has three ranges, and I also go up the mountain above my place for shooting outto 3-400 yards. I have to go down to the reservation, or west about 20 miles for long range shooting.

Don't comply with EPA "voluntarily," Mr. Mom. Instant the Administration changes to the Communist Party (commonly known as Democrats) they'll be on you like flies on Hillary's -- well, you get the idea.

That said, I'm spoiled rotten. There are three excellent 500 yard plus ranges within an hour, all clubs. The free places to shoot on public land are all being trashed and closed by the same morons that don't belong to the NRA and don't pay attention to elections. Blows my mind.

Our range goes to 1000 yards, has 600s and a nice big 300 yard line. We're on state land with a lease, but Plum Creek sold 2500 acres to some fancy developer and our lease line is only 1300 feet behind the bitts. One of our members is a caretaker, and he can hear even the 22s, when the fifties come out it's definitely audible. I sure hope Republicans or Libertarians and NRA members are building up there.

There is some concern over encroachment, we're about 7 miles from town and the DNRC agency is undergoing planning scoping on a hunk of state land that includes popular lakes, trails and our range. We're sweating a lease increase, but what we really would like to do is BUY the dirt and a bit more so no one can gripe to the Land Board and kick our butts off.

We have trees on either side, deer and bear all over (great for practicing range estimation), and a good group of people. The range is pointed north and the winds are usually dead for two hours after and before dark, most other days are pretty calm. Concrete benches, too. And only thirty five bucks a year. The only gripe I have is that we have winter...which means for five months my trigger finger rusts, but then again, I keep the rust off my SKIS then.

Hey bk, the whole thing with all of the long range rifles was for when i eventually move out to wide open spaces. Right now i am stickin with my .30-06! My two .30-30's will just have to sit aside for a while until i can get proficient with my '06.

Dave Skinner - I've shot on the Whitefish range, and it is a good set up. And I'm familiar with the Bigfork range, that goes out to about three hundred. Where are the other ranges in this area you are talking about within an hours drive?

We have a couple of unofficial community ranges.

They are self supervised, and a group of us makes and installs targets from 200yds out to 650yds,at 50 yd increments. It is so hot now, that I don't do out there much. Yesteday it was 117 F. It's like going fishing --- get out there early.

But Fall and Winter is great.

Kwacker;

We'll have to get together & do some skiing if not ridin' or shootin'.  Do you ever venture off the big mtn?  Every once in a while I'll go up to Teton Pass or down to Great Divide.  Could try to get over to Whitefish.

Here in GF Mont. the private range most use is the Missouri River Shooter's Assn. range.  It's the old AFB KD range.  It's about 5 miles out of town & pretty woeful when you get there.  Dues are $30.00.  The Assn. is building a new range though, but I haven't even seen the site.  Dues'll probably go up though.  Comes the time, I'll just set up ranges on the father-in-law's place when my wife inherit's.

NH, just a thought here, why don't you get yourself a nice air rifle of some sort. The shooting dicipline is the same as a regular firearm and you get to shoot most anytime you want. Pracitse is practise. You will be surprised how well you will do with "real guns" when you get on the range. BTW, I shoot thousands of airgun rounds a year. It keeps me on top of my game for hardly any $$$.
