Hey guys, I have been wanting to take a trip out west to go on an elk hunt. I wouldnt go until i turn 18, kinda as a graduation present to myself, and i was wondering where i should go. I have read of elk taken from New Mexico to Montana, so i am not sure where is the best place. I would want to bring back a decent to large sized elk, I'm not a trophy hunter. I just really would like to be somewhere in the Rocky Mountains with a Muzzleloader kinda like the Mountain Men. If you guys have any suggestions, feel free to post them.

The Dillon, Mt. area is pretty good, or was before wolves were put in the area. I'd avoid N.W. Montana. Absolutely the toughest hunting conditions anywhere for elk, due to terrain and heavy growth.

I think Colorado is supposed to have the best elk herd.
