We hear this often "Use Enough Gun On Hunting Big Game".
Robert Ruark coined this expression and even wrote a book on it with that title.
That mightg be good advise for elephant, lion, cape buffalo etc.  But I think today too many folks use too much gun for deer .
Now, I like big guns and have hunted deer to varmints with 416, 338, 9.3, all WAY more than needed for deer.  But in reality deer are easy to kill. With proper shot placement any center fire will quickly kill a deer..  Today I see so many hunters shooting rifles way more powerful than they can handle and way more than needed.  But they have been brain washed to think more is  better.

There is NO replacement for displacement!!!
Says the gut shooting 100 pound antelope with a 8mm rem magWink
I agree if a person can have a gun for each type of game.
A 30/30, 243, 6.5 Grendel, and 7.63X30 are in my mind the optimal deer sized guns.
Small will work but shot placement is much more important. Larger works to but heaver, and more potential for meat waist.

I am a big proponent to matching the tool to the job. You wouldn't use a 9lb sledge where a 12oz ballpeen would work. I think the average Joe gets caught up in the hype of the big marketing ploys and think they need huge magnums. Around here, I've shot a bunch of deer with my 30-30 and 35Rem. I have shot a couple with my 300 and 7mmRM but they were no deader than when I used the old 30-30. My go to nowadays is my 308, 358, 35Whelen, 7mm08 and such. Never had a deer walk away when I do my part.

The problem I see is too big often doesn't kill as well/quick as medium power rifles.

I shot a black bear with an 8mm mauser, 8x57 and a 170 gr bullet.  It went 10 foot.  2 years later I shot a same size bea, with the same doubld lung shot; using my 9.3 with a 286 gr bullet.  it ran 70 yards.
Bigger isn't always better.  medium size bullets moving at 2500 fps seem to kill better.
