Dang it's hard to pass up an easy deer.
Most our deer come out of some god forsaken hole or WELL off the trail/road.
So Far this year I have "passed" on 3 shooters, in hopes for a "Better" shooter. AND! There where easy deer to retrieve. Two on grass prairie not over a 1/2 mile from the road and one was in an alfalfa field where we had permission to " drive" any wear we wanted with the 4wheelers. The prairie deer where under 350 yards and 4 point " western count" typical mule deer. Quite wide and tall but wimpy on the mass, probably 2  / 3 years old but ,fat pigs. The one on the field was a white tail and was  little farther. Honestly I had the cross hairs on him for a LONG time. He was only like a 3 point but had HUGE mass, a very mature deer and probably will never have more points. I think if he would have given me a shot I would have taken him, he was walking almost straight away from me, not even a Texas heart shot. His rack was dark chocolate brown kinda cool looking.
DANG!
Only time will tell I guess.

Oh thank God that's where this thread was going! Thought it was going to go the 38 special route.

Always hard to pass on a decent shooter waiting for a monster. A decent rack is always good for the wall and ego, but a good meal warms the soul and if presented with a fine batch of walking steaks in easy pickins….I'll take the steaks!
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

D, remember....you don't eat the rack!

I like smal rack antelope and deer.  that means less than 3 years old and prime food.   My walls are filled with racks....now, my freezer is filled with steaks

You don't eat deer and elk? In my opinion that's the best meat their is.

But, if that's the case, I'd probably hold out for a big one too.

When I was a kid...
There was 10 of us kids and my parents.
Back then there was little $$$ for food , but gas was cheep.
We all had licenses and we hunted and fished all year.
That's all we eat, wild something.
Everyday every meal, now I prefer Angus and pig.ConfusedConfusedConfused

As a young kid, I raised on a chicken farm, all we ate for meat was chickens, ducks, turkeys.

Wasn't till I was 40 that I ate chicken again, still not my favorite food.

Yup....with you on that one Bear. I still love my brown eggs and such, but I can live without eating any chicken. Now grouse on the other hand!

I did a job for M&M/Mars years ago. A 10k gal. vat of chocolate blew up and I went in for the cleanup and repairs. 110 degrees and in a white factory jumpsuit getting chocolate sunk into my very being for a couple weeks turned me away from it for a few years.

Orange marmalade is my favorite toast coating.  My Uncle was a cook in WW-2 and had 55 gallon drums of the stuff, although it was harshly rationed in the US during the war.  He ate it on everthing , and put it into all his cooking.  When he got back from the war…he never again would even look at orange Marmalade.
