I wanted to get the oil changed before out LONG antelope trip in a few weeks.
My engine light came on once for a day about 3 weeks ago so I asked them to check the codes too. I get a discount at the dealer I got the truck from, yes my shiny red f150 with only 80,000 miles, new cooper tires and my HUGE new deer guard, with the oil change they wash the truck "For Free". I got a ride home, opposite side of town. 4 hours later no word from them so, I called them. I get the serves rep on the line, and asked if they got my truck finished, He said. I JUST got the estimate finished and we will have the oil changes with in the hour.??? WHAT? The trick had a very slight miss when first started, I just got back from a 1000 mile hunt and pulled 17 MPG round trip no problems. It doesn't use any oil or water or make a sound, it is hard to tell if it is running. He said #4 cylinder was dead and not moving, and as close as they can tell right now it will be around $10,000 for a new motor do you want us to still change the oil for you? WHAT??? I said NO, please come pick me up I'll get the truck. I get there and the truck is clean actually looked good. He said I can slate you in med next week and it take 2 or 3 days to replace the motor. The bill is $110 to read the codes and the estimate. WHAT? The ford warrantee ran out at 65,000 miles. I declined and took the truck. There is an out standing shop down the street that we use for everything automotive. I stopped and had a chat with him. This guy knows his stuff. I started it and opened the hood, he leans in to listen, then put is hand over the muffler. He said, Nope a bad valve. Ford 5.0 in the trucks around my year had no valve seat and they used just the iron in the heads, for what ever reason. Some have problems on #8 or #4 around 80,000 miles, some more some less. DANG but the truck sure looks good. I'll have to prosses this and make a plan, my Tec said it will run till it doesn't. Dang, Dang, dang... Know of anyone that wants a 2013 f150 with a HUGE deer guard? ![]() ![]() |

Send it off to Rousch, for less then that you can have a new Coyote 5.0 installed with performance package 750hp and 36k warranty. Thats sucks though.
Bright side would be you would have the only 2013 F150 in the neighborhood able to do 150mph and an 8 second quarter stretch in 4WD! Cuts down on the drivetime to hunting sites as well....You could sleep in a little bit more!

D, Boy I guess, dang, dang, dang. I sold my 1983 F-150 6 cyl.with 80K miles on it years ago to a friend. He still has it with over 200K on it and the valve cover has never been off. Yes, dang, dang, dang.

Maybe in the Appalachian Mtn but here truck motor is like a boat motor, worth more used then new.
![]() Wife and I talked it over. If we got a newer one and traded it in I would still need new tires AGAIN and a HUGE deer guard AGAIN, so we are in to it for $4000 extra just to get where I'm at now. My "GUY" says he can get new heads, gota change both, and in stall for just under $6000. That's the route we are going to go. He thinks it is fine to keep running it as it is till he can get it in. The truck only has 80,000 miles... Out here a one year old truck can have that kind of mileage. ![]() |

There is a reason you keep the Wallet In the back pocket, when Murphy wants to kick you in it you don’t want it in the front ones!

Sorry to hear that D.
My wifes truck is a 2012 F-150 with a 5.0. Now I am a little worried. Hers only has about 30,000 miles. I guess I better start planning ahead. The reason we went with the 5.0 is because the other option was a twin turbo V-6 and I figured I'd be buying turbos. Turbos might be cheaper than heads. Good Luck Wing master

Not all 5.0 get the problem.
My Mackinac says all the ford trucks he has been working on the EcoBoost are the MOST dependable. Only one had a bad turbo. I am still in the same camp as you.

Thanks D. I do feel better.
I like carburators too but fuel injection is a lot more efficient. At least I can rebuild and tune a carb. Wing master

Fuel injection is great for COLD below zero temps for always starting.

It more the computer that makes it "always" starts. I had an old throttle body injected car that would never start under -20* I had to keep it running all night if I could not plug it in to keep it worm.

EFI is a lot better then a carb these days. Plug-and-play for the computers and selectors for programs at your finger tips, reliably is better then a carb as well, makes it hard not to justify having it.

I hear the old "man I hate the computers" ALL THE TIME!! Well in my business the old 425 Cat was the measuring stick for medium/heavy duty diesel power. The old pump and line systems just worked and worked extremely well. But, enter in the Gov't and here we are with fuel efficient regulations, emission regulations and we have all the electronics, aftertreatments, DPF, DEF, EFI, SPFI, etc. I have quit wishing I could adjust the fuel settings and reset the static timing when someone was complaining about low power. Now it is, plug in the laptop and start the troubleshooting as per the requirements or else you don't get paid OR fined by the EPA for making an engine out of regulation, which usually means the engine won't run. We can wish for a carb, or mechanical injection pump, but the days are long gone guys. All we can do is reminisce...
