Years ago, I quit buying gun mags (except Rifleman). But lately, I've been spending large amounts of time in medical facilities. So lately, i've picked up a few reads.
Amazing everything that says all cartridges before the Creedmore were worthless!! Only very long bullets have shooting value. Well, I still like shooting my 348, 8mm, 9.3x62, 25-20. I was in alocal big gun shop, just asked if they had a 30-06 wood stocked bolt action.....none. Told that no one buys '06 any longer! |

I haven't been in the market for a long gun for so long, I don't even know what's available locally. I see the gun racks full and gotta assume the old standards still rule the roost around here but not sure. I can't imagine no .30-06 in the story but maybe the times have changed here, too. k

I'm not sure about cartridges but I have noticed that wood stocks are few and far between. Between the 2 stores I frequent their was 2 bolt action rifles with wood and a few lever actions.
The rest were all plastic.

The local Sportsmen's Warehouse had not a single wooded stock on rifles, but did have all the highgrade shotguns with wooden stocks. Are shotgun guys classier that riflemen????

I'm not sure who's classier but I'm pretty sure young guys have a different perspective of what a beautiful gun is than I do.

I have a mix of both. When we say plastic, I am referring to a plastic stocked bolt action, not an AR type. The ARs seem to rule the roost out here. Of course with no restrictions on what you can have on them and a large demographic of younger people making up a majority of the shooters, I can understand why. I don't care for them, I can't explain why, maybe my reloading addiction, seems like pinging brass all over the ground sends me on to OCD spells, maybe it's because I like to see how well I can make something group, not how fast I can empty the magazine. I know they are accurate, but that doesn't seem to be the reason some (most) get them after watching people blast away at a public range. They all look the same, yea I know there are some differences, but by and large, they are mostly all the same. To me, there is nothing prettier than a nice hunting bolt action rifle setup, standard size scope, set in low rings. Wood is nice, but the nice composite stocks are so much more practical for real hunting. There is a big marketing push for the last, greatest wiz bang magic round. Anyone with half a brain can see thru the BS of trying to sell more ammo and more guns. Not saying the Creed or Nosler smokers won't kill critters, but are they any deader than they would be with a 30-06 or 308?

I have an AR but I'm definately not an AR guy.
I prefer blued steel in a walnut stock but can see the benefit of a plastic stock on a bolt gun. For the last several years I have hunted with a plastic stocked rifle. This year I'm going back to walnut. Deer and antelope with a Sako Forrester in .243 and for elk a model 70 in 30-06.

Seems like we all have a mixture of wood & "plastic" stocks on long guns. Blued steel & Walnut is my preference but practicality does have some value. That said there is a place for the "plastic" stocks on some long guns & I have both as it seems so do most of us here.
