Some states require proof of sex be transported with your animal. If I have a doe/fawn license and shoot a male fawn...do I need to take the testicals? what does that prove?

Where I hunt if I shoot a male fawn I can almost always get Ol'Rusty close enough to take it whole. I just field dress it and drag it to where I can get it. A fawn shouldn't be heavy enough to warrant quartering it.

The testicals don't prove it was a fawn. How is a fawn defined???

The Wyoming game and fish defines "Fawn" as "Young of the year antelope or young of the year deer"
I'm no wildlife biologist but I have my doubts that they can tell if a male deer was born in the spring of that year by measuring nut size. But I could very well be wrong. I do think that if the carcass is intact you could tell by body size if an animal is actually a "fawn". It's also interesting to me that when it comes to hunting elk the license says it's good for an "Antlerless" elk. This is a better way of saying basically the same thing. They define "antlerless" as a deer, elk, or moose that has no antler growth plainly protruding from the scull. Females and young of the year without visible antlers are antlerless big game animals. Thinking about it, This does leave an opening for enturpretation. What is plainly protruding? Wing master |
