As I get older I sure think to myself I want a 4wheeler.
I have my "mud dog" But that can only haul one person and only 18 MPH, LOTS of fun but...
If I had a 4wheeler the GD could drive it behind me, pick up my broken pieces and tow the dog to the truck.
I have a trailer for one and Ramps to put either one in the truck. Also for longer treks with the boy and his wife, they have two.

SO

I like their honda rancher it fits in the back of my truck with the tailgate closed.
I'm thinking I need like a 450/ 500 cc, 4-wheel drive, and elec shift.
I'm open to most brands 'cept the Korean stuff. I need in good condition, fair tires, prefer a winch.
2007 ish to now but I can't do new price, maybe $2500 tops ish.
In Montana would be the best but ID, ND, Wy maybe.

Can anyone give me a lead?

I see them from time to time. I don't pay that much attention to them but I'll look closer when I see one.

Back home they're a hot commodity. I sold my 2 as they were in my garage, the old one wouldn't even start! I was gonna take them and have em tuned up and cleaned, nope, guy bought my tractor (2018 Kioti) and both wheelers as they sat for just a few bucks less than I planned to advertise them after getting them fixed up.

I have 2 Honda 2wd 230 Recons.  They make/made a 350 or so Recon.  I really like Hondas.

That said, I have a 2wd Yamaha Tmberwolf and it runs better, or seems to as the trans is closer-ratio and it drops less RPM when you shift....Soooooo, it seems like it has more power as the accelration is quicker.  Both of em are about the same in the dunes (2nd gear is about it) and when climbing in the forest.

All of them fit in the back of my 80s Nissan PU.

I am NOT a fan of electric shift and PS as the "Old ways work best."  New fangeled crap.   AND, the first few years of electric shift on Hondas had issues....or so I've read.

I do not like CVTs, but some of the folk that have them never have issues w/them and I 've never had one.  Snowmobiles use em just fine.  Then newer cars...not so much.  I was told by a salesman (I think), that if you have a CVT, and are climbing, use low range...makes sense to me.  You should gear down when you climb.

I was broke in on auto-clutch ATCs.  It automatically disengages at lower RPM and when you give it the gas, it goes.  When you touch the shift lever, it does everything for you, all you have to do is shift....up or down.  This is what I like...they work and have been in use since the 70s.

I gots a stupid question...can you drive a stick shift?  The reason I ask is that now a days people don't know, and the concept of constantly shifting to keep it in the power-band is foreign to them (talking about the dunes here) and the dern things just won't go like they are supposed to....driver error, not machine error.

After 2 hours the stick shift is just fine.  But it does wear a mark on the top of your boot!!!

I figured as much.  We took the family to the dunes down near Yuma and El Centro last year....my future son-in-law (in about 2 wks), was having problems.  The damn thing just wouldn't go.  I started quizzing him...he doesn't know how to drive a stick.  It doesn't know when to floor it, and when to cruz and/or coast.

My 230s...they are really lacking in the power department in the dunes.

My 2wd 230s will do more than any stock 4x4.  I stay out of mud and sloppy stuff though...not that I won't cross a muddy patch.
