Seeing how there is very little of the old Johnson left in the dog, I'll start a new post.
The track and suspension and drive cogs are a major part of the dog it is little of the snowmobile.

As we can see I reshaped the track so both ends are elevated off the ground. The front is to clime over obstacles, the back so I can lift the front some to help turn it. That the plan in my mind anyway.

I had to "Beef" up the springs on the bogies, as I added iron it squatted down to low.

I have the frame for the "Deck" where the Motor will mount and have some storage on the dog.

Still have to design the hitch point and some how attach handle bars.

What do you estimate the weight to be?

Will it climb a ramp into the bed of a pick-up?

Will it have a reverse?

Looking very good.

I ordered a torque converter clutch drive like a snowmobile only smaller which is belt but then it has a sprocket from there to chain to the track.
Bear
so far its under 200 pounds, I think, and the motor is 77 pounds.
I'm hoping it will be around 320.
I hope it will clime a ramp it has carbide steel cleats acros the track every 3 inches or so.
I'm going to load it on to a bumper buddy on the back of the truck, so it is only like two feet off the ground.
The ramp will go on either side of the buddy so I can drive on and drive off no reverse.

You do like that "drive on drive off" style.   Very good idea.   reminds me of the trailer for the airboat!!

Centrifugal clutch yes but not from the Johnson.
The problem with the airboat was it did not turn fast enough to make it work. This is one made to turn at slower RPM. I could not get one for the VW motor to much HP for the smaller clutches.
Hope it works I'm at the very top of it's rating for HP.

It does not look like much change, but I think the Truck is finished.
It seams quite substantial, no wiggle to it.
I have shafts, sprockets, pillow bearings, and chain ordered.
I hope I got the ratios right. If it only goes 17 mph not the 20 as by bench mark, will be fine too.
Picks are front, back and both sides.
I did not want to make mounts till I see where the other stuff has to be.

Gota be able to steer this crazy thing.
I plan to put it sideways on a bumper buddy on the truck to transport it. It can only be as long as the truck is wide. I'm making the handle to fold up over the top or come off and set on top, and the trailer or sled on top of that. here is what I have so for.

It never seen like I get much done but I work 1/2 a day and plan the other half.

Got the deck on. Made an adjustable motor mount and put it on the motor. Laid out the Jack shaft I'll have to build it up an Inch to let the big gear to clear.

The long piece of shaft will be cut off. The pully is for a brake. It will have a pully that does not turn and will operate like a belt clutch backward.

I have to make a supper structure under the deck to bolt the motor to, I'm thinking canal iron.

I have lots of Ideas for each.
So far right o target weight.

RMP on the final drive is slightly slower than plan.
I get 882 plan was 992 rpm.
PUT the motor on governor will turn almost 4000, specs said 3500.
Still will be faster than I think I want to go standing in a sled for miles.

More work...
 I finished the brake.
Simple pull the handle with a rope and it stops.

Till I get a thumb throttle and cable , should be here next week, I started the trailer.
It will be for no snow, and a "walking Axle" set up.
I have a set of Johnson skis I plan to strap on when there is snow and dry ground in between. I'll do a sled for deep snow.

Like a snow machine, it stops when the rpm's drop down below the clutch. If it rolls off a cliff I guess your lucky you fell off.
So the answer is no, thumb throttle should snap to idle when your hand comes off the handle bar.

The trailer will be used when little or no snow, I can add skis If it's hard snow.
When there is a lot of snow I use the Pelican sled.

I took it out in my alley and gave it a test run.
I only had a string for the accelerator but it ran quite well.
So I went and got the GPS and wound her up.
Well less than a half block I hit 23.5 MPH, and that's where it stayed.
I was quite tickled with all the "Figuring" I did to come that close to what I wanted.
By the way have you ever gone 23.5 mph standing in a wagon?
The walking axel worked great and took out most for the bumps and roughness on the graveled alley.

NO red Bear, I'm going to go with FLAT gray, good for summer and winter hunting.

I finished most the little things ,still need to think on the brake.
I bit the bullet and got a sheet of treated 3/4” ply for the bumper buddy, anchored it with 5/8 carage bolts. I stacked it all on the buddy like I plan to hall it, rapped some big tie down straps and lifted it with my scale. Just under 500 pounds with the buddy.
My f150 should handle that ok, my lights me be high with it on…

What is the weight rating for the bumper buddy? All the weight is hanging on that "tongue" in the receiver. I think that is the limiting factor.

The "buddy" is rated at 600 pounds, according to the sticker.
The reserve draw bar says 1200 pounds.
Ford says 1300 pounds.
I have easily increased the buddy another 50%.
The only thing I could not "Beef" up is the tube that goes in to the receiver.
I could but a very difficult job.
I would have to get thicker wall tubing and cut every thing off and reweld it all, My little welder can't weld anything that thick.

Could get a smaller box beam and insert it inside the tube.  Would strengthen it, but might bend a little with over-weight if the gap between the beam and the tube is large.

The biggest problem with that much weight on the carrier is BOUNCING.  Washboard road might get it bouncing up-down which would increase the load up to 5 times the static load...some carriers can be locked down to limit bounce, but that also makes it rigid if you ground-out on the carrier....I've straightened a few.

All but paint and a longer ramp to put it on the bumper buddy, it's ready to hit the trails. I'll work on a sled, later you know, when there is snow.

It is just as fast with two as one.
A little adjusting the throttle and it up to almost 25 mph.( with two)

That turned out great.

I was thinking about your carrier. Would their be a problem with building a small, like 4X8 or 6X8 trailer? That would take a lot of stress off of your hitch. And axles and fenders are relatively inexpensive at places like Northern Tool.

Just a thought.

Before having a trailer I would just build a longer ramp and put it in the bed of the truck.
I don't anticipate a problem. I put 4 people ( 600 pounds+) on the buddy and we all jumped around with very little deflection.
The truck could benefit from a set of air bags in the back when pulling, so if there is a problem I'll add some.

I think I'm ready for a field test.
The little testing I did at home reveled I needed to Beef up the handle bars, finished.
The ramp I had was WAY to short so I had to make one it's about 54" long much better.
I had the buddy beefed up but after looking at it closer I found some week spots, got them worked out I think. I talked with my Tire guy and he think the weight issue should be ok, one day I may but on some airbags to keep the truck level when loaded.
With the muddy dog loaded with the trailer on top and me on the buddy the truck deflex 2 or 3 inches
The buddy it self is 4" lower, the head light will be to high I think, airbags would help that to.
Next week I'll do a dirt trail test...

Full tank of Corn gas, on the dog and truck.
My DuoMax Motor on the dog is designed to use 10% they claim you should not run Non ethanal.
Yes I run Cooper truck tires. They don't "DO" ply's anymore but there rated 10 ply and a very heavy tread, you know for Montana gumbo.
Top weight rating what ever the letter is, and speed rated to 100.
When the wife goes back to work I think I'll add a set of rear air bags.

U certainly have the tires for the use required for off road driving. Those 10 ply have a heavier sidewall to minimize sway & will resist punctures better too. Yup, air bag system looks familiar, I had a set of the "Coil Rite" style (don't remember brand) on my 1/2 ton pickup when I used it to tow a 5th wheel. They had an air valve installed on rear bumper area to inflate or deflate both air bags together, as needed, when truck empty or loaded. Should work fine and help balance the truck when loaded like that off the rear carrier. I have an on board air lift system/compressor on the 3/4T truck now for towing the 5th wheel. Push a button to raise or lower truck to level the tow load. Don't forget to apply for the 20% off coupon that "popped up" in the link. Gives peace of mind for the extra load extended off the hitch & should make for safer handling too. Clap

I had a simple brake system but It didn't work well and difficult to work.
SO plan b+g=m.

This is a disk brake disk off the old Johnson I welded on to a hub I got.
Dang with out a lathe it's hard but I got it so it's really Squire and tracks nice.
Now, some kind of caliper that I can pull with a cable.
Something similar to a bike but more linear and way heaver.Smile

Are you going to fabricate the caliper yourself?

I'm picturing something like those tongs that they used to pick up blocks of ice?

Most of the early 70-00s cars with all disc brakes had a small lever actuator pn the rear disc caliper for the hand brake/emergency brake (see  1990 dodge daytona).junk yard?

It took a few attempts to make them work, but I have it now. BRAKES !!!
They look like a "Rat" build but they stop.
In fact I'll have to be carful, it will lock up the track and skid with the trailer pushing the back of the dog.
I'll try to relocate the handle to be a little easily activated.
AND yes I disabled the "Lock" on the vice grips as to not be able to release them.

All in cost not counting time is $12.

We took the muddy dog for a test run in the wild...
Everything I wanted. The Bumper buddy worked great, then dog ran just right.
With the 4wheeler in back it did not squat as bad, still need airbags but it will work till I get some.
We put 15 miles on it with out a glitch.
I did fine however I need the brake up by the hand grip and I need to make straight handle bars.

Fantastic, D you are a mechanical fabrication genius.

seems K was outrunning the quad.

Great video.  You can film and drive the quad on a bumpy trail at the same time.

I need to beg a ride on the dog...maybe to go down and back at that PD town in the valley with all the gumbo-mugbo stuff????  Remember you never goit me a ride on the Air boat-mobile.

Thanks for the video.

Are they still CB's tracks?  He is smiling.

How do the snow-machine track wear on those stone/gravel roads?????

Yes the Johnson track and Bogie system.
Cant run off road with anything in Montana on state land so you gota walk in to shoot.
We kept the speed down you will never be able to open it wide on two tracks and live to tell about it.
WAY plenty of power to clime anything you feel you need to clime.
Just a side note if we wanted to make it a racer there is plenty of HP just change the gear I know if everything held together it would do over 35mph.
As far as wear I don't know, the track is just three strips or bias ply rubber with carbide cleats riveted to it to hold it together. It shows NO sign of any use yet. Clap

Very impressive D. I can see that being really useful.

Can you go off road on snow? They have different rules here for snowmobiles. You can't take a four wheeler off road in most places but you can take a snowmobile off road.

Well the muddy dog is working so well I had to do some up grades.
The handle bars I had where from a rototiller and not very comfortable to hang on to and steer. The brake was just a leaver down on the shank of the Handle bars, worked so good You would fall off trying to use it gently.
SO...
New bars straight across a little wider and slightly swept to the back. Now you can lean on them or pull your self back on.
I switched the position of the accelerator from finger pull to thumb push, nicer.
I put the brake on the grip part of the new bars. Now you can use it as needed not just ON or OFF.
Seems much better all round.

the handle bar UPgrade looks to be a good idea. The brake system too!
Does that type of machine have to be licensed like an ATV or cycle or snowmobile??????????

I don't think it can be Licensed as anything.
I'll never be able to drive it on county ,city, or us roads. I'll have to get a "trails" permit $25 to run on ATV trails, AND a snowmobile pass $25 to run it on snowmobile trails. I should not need anything but a citified spark arrester to run on BLM roads.Shocked
