Stalin's Legacy - Genocide by Starvation:

Why the Holodomor matters:

I discovered this word a few years ago in Paris, attending a vigil with candles held by the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church community in Paris.

It took place on the hill near Notre Dame du Sacré Coeur.

For the second year in a row, I am now in Ukraine and I have celebrated the Resurrection of Christ with Ukrainian Orthodox Christians.

I discovered the rites and the traditions such as having a meal at the cemetery with the departed family ancestors.

I am now more sensitive to some details, and noticed something that shows the extent of the Holodomor and gives an idea of this genocide.

Its results make Hitler, one of those butchers of the 20th century, pale in comparison to Stalin.

I could not help notice that in the cemetery I was at this year, discrepancies between the dates of birth and the dates of death, compared to the normal life cycle..

Depending on the location of the graves and, clearly, the period of time in history when they were dug, I could see that many people born between 1880 and 1910 died at an advanced age, averaging between 90 and 100 years old.

Then, in another part of the cemetery, were buried people born between 1910 and 1928; they died in years averaging between 1985 and 2010.

Surprisingly, there is a huge gap between 1928 and 1938. Almost nobody born in between these years was buried there.

Finally, I could see that many people born between 1940 and 1955 had been buried between 1985 and 2010, the same as those who were born around the time of the First World War.

I noticed the names of those born around the Second World War differed from those who died before.

Until after the Great War, they were typically Ukrainian names, some of them clearly from Polish origin.

Starting with 1940 and 1941, two third of those born clearly had Russian names.

I began to have an idea about what happened. When I explained my observations to the person who was with me, the answer was one word: "Holodomor."

I was taken to a corner of the cemetery where a simple cross was standing, and it was explained to me that it had been erected in memory of 800 persons who had died in their homes or in the field. These were people who had been buried without being identified; they totaled 80% of the village population.

500 men, 270 women and 100 children had died.

The men let the food to the women and the children; they died first.

Then the women let the children have the little food that they could find and, and they died. Many of them died pregnant.

This gives an idea of the inhumane behaviour of the forefathers of today's FSB; to be able to starve people to death, to kill millions with slow death - except for those who were lucky enough to be shot trying to steal a few grains of corn, a potato, a fruit.

The tools had all been confiscated; someone explained to me that the only tool left from her grandfather was the handle of a scythe that he had made from a solid tree branch. The blade was confiscated.

I was shown the underground cache that her great-grandfather and her grandfather had dug in the hope of hiding some food, bit without success.

It shows the extent that the Russians and a few local Soviet lackeys went to in order to break this country, to attempt to annihilate its will and its spirit, to suppress its history and its culture.

This soil that I work for a few months now is so fertile, so rich, so easy to work.

I was introduced to an old woman last year; her hands were completely deformed. She was born in 1925, and she survived by digging the soil with her bare hands to catch worms that she ate; those worms were the key to her survival for two years.

What strikes me is that these people do not hate Russians, whether they are over 90 years old, or only 35 and having barely lived in the USSR with the vermin that had occupied their country.

They have survived, their language survived and their traditions survived, in spie of Soviet efforts. At the time that the USSR exterminated Ukranians by hunger, it had also organinised a summit of the Bandura players of Ukraine; 1500 of them met in Kharkiv, where they were then were shot and their instruments destroyed.

The artistic memory of a people was almost totally annihilated.

When I drive through the countryside, I often see an old, abandoned railroad track or path going to nowhere and I follow it. These often end at an abandoned military site, huge military facilities and storage areas; these are what is left from the war machine that the USSR had created to conquer the world, but this is another story that I will write about...maybe later.

During the tours I took, I visited a few abandoned churches where I noticed hundred of bullet impacts on walls only to a certain height; not the result of a firefight between soldiers, but the visible, slowly-disappearing traces of mass executions of priests or common Ukrainians.

Most of the people with me did not even understand what was displayed right in front of their eyes....

In another time, a freedom fighter said "Ich bin ein Berliner." I just want to say that this is my land; this is the land that I live on , the land that is Europe, the land that I call home.

Why the Holodomor matters to me:

Members of my German family actually suffered through the Holodomor. They migrated from Alsace and the Black Forest region of Germany to Ukraine in the early 1800s, at the invitation of the emperor, to set up "colonies" and farm the rich soil, probably some of the richest soil on the earth. In return, they were given certain benefits such as freedom to keep their language, freedom from conscription and others.

My direct ancestors helped to found a town called Sulz, on the Beresan River in what is now the Mikolayiv Oblast. Unfortunately, around the turn of the 20th century, things got pretty hostile for them as the promised benefits were rescinded and they began to suffer persecution from Russia. My great-great-grandfather and his family, including my great-grandfather, left and immigrated to Western North Dakota. The extended family that stayed behind eventually got the worst of the persecution and ethnic cleansing that the rest of Ukraine suffered during the Holodomor. The "Germans from Russia" who were in the United States received letters from family members who were reduced to total starvation and privation, all to satisfy the whims of Stalin and his fellow Kremlin elite. Only God knows how many died to make lebensraum for loyal Sovjet cattle, who didn't know the first thing about farming the richest soil in all of Europe.

Even after WW2, the persecution continued. The remaining Wolgadeutsche, Schwarzmeerdeutsche and other Germans in Ukraine were rounded up on trains and deported to Siberia and other remote areas as virtual prisoners. I have actually seen photos of people with my last name who were born in Siberia, and they look just like members of my family here. There is no doubt. The town where my ancestors' bones are buried was razed by Stalin and does not exist anymore - erased from history. You can see the ghostly outline of its location on Google Maps, so he wasn't completely successful, but the scars remain.

Stalin is roasting in Hell right now, and somehow I am sure he is laughing, too. Apologists around the world serve as useful idiots in distracting from his crimes, and through the efforts of these people, his ultimate plan is in serious danger of coming to fruition: that all of Ukraine will fall to and remain under total domination from Moscow. Only the strong spirit of the Ukrainian people is keeping this from happening, and such spirit just might be enough to persevere, in spite of such efforts.
