last night, i was watching a fairly-recent documentary of the battle at the little bighorn river. the general topic was concerned with whether or not reno and benteen left custer out to dry, when they could have saved him. Roll Eyes

the fact that this was hashed out a hundred years ago did not seem to matter, nor did the fact that, no matter how you slice it, the 7th cavalry was out-gunned and out-manned beyond any hope of any kind of victory. i was amazed (not in a good way) at many of the things that were said, as well as the false and convenient logic used to arrive at many of the conclusions taht were reached by people who a) should have known better and b) have more than a small influence on the prevailing interpretations of this little slice of history.

but on a more ominous note, extrapolatiing to "the big picture," what do these huge and glaring distortions and misinterpretations, just on this one, relatively minor topic, say for the rest of mankind's understanding of history? for all we know, our interpretations going back to the beginnings of civilisations are not only off, but completely backwards ~ whole schools of thought based on the flimsiest of logic and reason, due primarily to looking at past events through contemporary lenses.

or maybe, the producers of teh show were simply trying to push an agenda and make a few dollars - who knows ~

"...for all we know, our interpretations going back to the beginnings of civilizations are not only off, but completely backwards ~ whole schools of thought based on the flimsiest of logic and reason, due primarily to looking at past events through contemporary lenses."

TOTALLY 100% TRUE...FEW REALIZE THIS...THEY JUST REPEAT WHAT THEY HEARD/READ IT.

Religion is a great example; look at all the divergent views that have translated into BELIEF, that people will kill for (and have killed for over the history of mankind).

Doctors are another group that just repeat what they read or were told in Medical schools or by drug companies.  Few if any actually know any science about the human body.  Remember medicine is an ART not a science.

News and magazine journalist just repeat what they got in press releases;  Either from companies, politicians, or activists!

Something tells me a daisy cutter wouldn't have even had to hit them and the conflict would have ended.

Lets go back a little further. Had those poor savages just killed off Columbus and his sickly crews......hmmm. If the indigenous natives had our technology and were nice enough to attack the dirty and midevil Europeans instead with modern weaponry.... In light of things who cares really if the natives won a small battle only to get slaughtered mercilessly for the decades to come. History has played out and to the victors belong the rights to write it the way they wish...accurate or not.

Fact is the old testament has proven itself more accurate historically then any other text. Scientists are continuously finding ancient cities and temples long thought to be fictitious simply by following the accounts and sources it holds as guidance.

A grain of salt is needed with any written history. In the end, a battle was fought, one side won, the other did not. All the rest is well...open to interpretation.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

Speaking of mule_tail (Ron's son Mike), I wonder how Ron and the family are doing? Don't hear from any of them much anymore.
