I didn't want to hijack D's thread so I started this one.

Hey 900f, Is the new powder you saw IMR-4451?

I have been reading about it. It is supposed to be very similar to IMR-4350 and H-4350 as far as burn rate.

It is supposed to be very temperature stable. That is the big selling point.

I havn't seen any on store shelves around here yet, but am looking forward to trying some.

Yeah, That's the ones. If the 4451 really is similar to 4350 I think I will really like it. I use IMR 4350 in several loads. That and 4064 are the two powders I use most.

geeze Wing...I know they say "if it ain't broke don't fix
it"....but those are old Pre-ball type powders..not saying
they have no place on the bench any more..I actually have
both of them in inventory.....I have been trying to use
ball powders more cuz they meter so well....therefore, I'm
wondering just what powder measure do you use with them?

I guess, I'm old fashioned too, IMR4350 is my go to powder. IMR4831 is second favorite, followed by IMR4895 for small stuff. I use more Bullseye, than anything else on pistol too. I do try the new stuff, just to compare.

Fella's;

One thing I did notice about the two of 'em was that the shop that was stocking them also had the price up to almost $30.00 a pound. Way too high for my taste. Shouldn't be any more than another powder, which run about $24.95 a pound.

IBD.

I changed to Varget and other SC (short cut)powders 9 years ago, just because they meter so well.

I use a 55 Lyman door-knocker style.

Fella's;

I went back the same shop today & looked at the new powders again. Actually, there were three of them. And they are: IMR 7977, IMR 4451, and Hodgdon's US869. For what it's worth, the latest Hodgdon 2015 loading manual has write-ups of the new IMR powders, which include one that the shop did not have. Which is IMR 4166. All of these new IMR powders are formulated with the new "ENDURON" technology, whatever that is.

To my mind they'd have to work a whole lot better than the proven IMR powders to make them worth a coupla bucks more a pound. After all, why should I take a chance on spending thirty bucks for something that may not produce as good a load in one of my given guns, let alone a beter one? If you want me to try it, the introductory price should be a good bit lower, not higher.

I wonder who failed basic marketing 101?

I figured they would be in the same price range as the original IMR powders.

IBD, I only have one rifle I load max loads for. I usually find an accurate load a little below max. I use an old Pacific (now Hornady) powder measure. It almost always throws a powder charge within one little line on the pointer on my balance beam scale plus or minus. If I am working up a load for a rifle I throw a charge a little light and trickel in the last little bit.

Like Bear I bought a couple pounds of Varget and a couple pounds of H-4350SC. I think if I can make a load work with it, it will be more accurate to meter.

Back to the original subject, I don't think I will be interested in buying a more expensive powder just because it's new. IMR 4350 is pretty resistant to temperature changes. That is what was appealing in the new powders.

I believe the new IMR Enduron type powders are claiming to
have the copper eraser powers of the CFE (copper fouling
eraser) powders.

That might make it worth a premium price.

I am not one of those guys that likes to clean guns.

Wing...you still have to clean the gun...I think the new
copper eraser type powders just stop any real build up I'd
guess. Found some of the new IMR stuff at LGS...$33.95/lb.
Pretty spendy for me anyway.

Fella's;

I just don't seem to have that big a problem with copper fouling. But then I do use Sweet's 7.62 ammonia. Yeah, it stinks, but it works pretty damn good too. Just don't walk off and forget ya left it in the barrel overnight.

I bought some of the original Hodgdon's CFE powder and wasn't impressed. I couldn't get it to give good enough groups to warrant buying any more of it. And Sweet's is cheaper & a bottle lasts longer.
