I hope them auditors take a real close look at yer books... old accountants never die, they just lose their balance!

Looks like I am the third oldest by posts so far.  I am retired & have been for 5 years. I love guns. I have been trying to downsize. I have sold 3 & traded 2 so far. I really didn't need 7 rifles I could hunt deer with. I found the right shotgun for my needs (Beretta untralight 12 ga) & I don't need those other 4! My main hunting is with a shotgun. Ruffed grouse, pheasants & quail in AZ.   I go on a p. dog shoot once a year & hunt whitetails.  I love too rough it in my motorhome & that where I should be!   But a family illness has but all summer plans on hold!  The motorhome doesn't mean I am  rich, just good credit!

Okay everybody here goes.... I was born [1958] & mostly raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada [except for a brief period in the early '60's when we lived in southern Germany]. My Dad had immigrated from Germany to Canada as a young man, after he served a brief hitch in the U.S. Army. My Mom's family goes back to pioneer stock in balmy British Columbia right here on Vancouver Island. I completed high school and two years of college here.

I am a career law enforcement officer with the oldest police department in Canada, west of the Great Lakes [even pre-dated the Northwest Mounted Police, later RCMP, by 15 years]. In 23 years of service I have held a variety of interesting positions but the past 13 years have predominantly been plainclothes/investigative work.

I was previously married & divorced. Remarried again in 2000 to a wonderful gal that I have known for over 20 years. She is also a career law enforcement officer. My 15 year old son lives with us and we also share our lives with 3 Akita [Japanese Bear] dogs, that are my wife's babies.

I've had a lifelong interest in firearms & shooting sports. Didn't actually go hunting until later in life though [my late 30's]. Haven't been out hunting since '97 when my hunting partner moved to another province for work. Been working on getting my loading gear set-up again to start shooting more.

Regards, Marcus.

Nice meeting all of y'all.

Thankfully I'm not an old fart.... yet.  I was born in 1969 in Fairhope AL (right across the bay from Mobile).  I grew up fishing for sure.  When I was still young though, I moved to Memphis TN.  Grew up there for the most part, but still made many trips to south AL to visit family and go fishing.  My father always hunted growing up and started to get the itch again when I was in college, so that would be when my hunting habbit took off.  Once I graduated in 1992, I started working as an engineer in the auto industry.  Work brought me to Knoxville TN (fartherst north I've ever lived).  Met a wonderful lady at church and got married in 2000.  She's a CPA and I'm an engineer, so don't get into a numbers conversation with either one of us, especially her... she'll thow a spreadsheet on you so fast your head will spin .  She's a dang good shot too... loves my .300 Win.  Anyway, I got tired of getting pounded by the big three and went back to school a couple years ago.  Just graduated this past Saturday with my MBA from Univ. of Tenn.... GO VOLS!!!

I love hunting, fishing, guitars (the louder the better), and I get pretty dang scientific about reloading.

It's been a pleasure reading and learning about each of you.  I know we'll all get a chance to chat more.

Y'all shoot straight!!!

I am Kansas born and will die in Kansas but not any time soon. I have lived long enough that I don't hate anything anymore, altho I still have some strong dislikes. Walmart and manual Prostate exams are equally disagreeable, but at least the Prostate exam has some lasting value. I prefer old guns and old friends but continue to pursue newer models of both. Once I acquire either one I never trade them off. I have never had to bail out any of my offspring and wish the reverse were true. I enjoy the varied blatherings of posters on here and naturally begin to form a mental image of some of them according to the nature of their posts. Some of them are extremely homely. ( You all know who you are).

ok, i'll refresh the memories of those who don't remember last time i did one of these...

i was born in 1973 in los angeles, ca. was raised there, and stayed there until the early 1990's, when i joined the navy. went to iraq part 1 (on the uss constellation, cv-64 - was a boiler tech, and anybody who knows what a bt is/was is at least as old as i am!!). wasn't enjoyable.

after the navy, i moved here - south dakota. discovered hunting as soon as the greyhound (actually, greyhound didn't come this far - took a sub-let bus from greyhound called jackrabbit lines) let me out the door. also discovered that people thought you were weird if you didn't have a gun - quite a switch for me, coming from the strong anti-gun state of california. had to rectify the gun situation so i could be normal.

did the fishing thing, too... but for the life of me, can't understand why people do it on purpose.

shortly after my first gun purchase, discovered pheasant hunting. then i discovered deer hunting, which led to big game hunting. pheasants are now just something to do when nothing else is open. after my big game discoveries, i discovered prairie dogs, which led to precision shooting. precision shooting led to long range shooting. and with each discovery, my gun collection increased exponentially. discovered waterfowl, and really took to goose hunting. then i figured out the thing w/ hunting dogs, and got a pair of labs... then i discovered bowhunting...

then i got married, and had 2 kids. discovered that my wife didn't have a gun, and was therefore weird... she is normal now, however, and has accompanied me on a few 'dog trips with her 223, and shot a pheasant or 2 w/ her 20 ga., might have dumped a few skunks w/ her s&w 686 in 357, and killed a rabbit or 2 w/ her 22... didn't want my kids to be weird, so my first-born (now 4 years old) has a rem model 7 in 243, and my second born (now 8 months) is getting her rem model 7 next month. probably be a 243 also, but since i don't care for the 243, it could be a 7-08...

guess that brings everybody up to date on my hunting bio... been a relatively brief hunting career, but i learned the ropes quick, and have drawn an average of 5 big game tags per year since my 2nd year of hunting deer... probably have killed an average of about 4 big game critters per year since my 2nd year of hunting. haven't killed a turkey or elk yet, but both those will change in the next year or two (finally have enough points for sd elk tag to be a possibility soon, and wife wants to do a turkey hunt in the spring)...

for reloading... as my gun collection grew, i discovered that 1- i couldn't afford to feed all those guns, and 2- i wanted accuracy. the obvious answer was basic gunsmithing stuff and handloading.

ok, i'm done writing, now.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I'll chime in -- I've been enjoying this thread. I think I fall to the old fart side of the bell curve. Born 1951 in Tokyo Japan (hey, we don't pick where we're born) of missionary parents. Father died when I was 11. He had grown up in the backwoods of Arkansas and taught me a tremendous amount about shooting, stalking, and killing game. I spent a couple of years in the States with him and we hunted with the "family" in Arkansas. Squirrels for food, Coons to sell their hides, Crows for the bounty on their feet and gophers and moles for their bounty as well. The county we lived in paid something like a dime for a pair of crow feet and a nickel for a pair of gopher feet. We stayed in soda pop money that way. There weren't really any deer to speak of in that area -- I was sixteen before I killed a whitetail.

I lurk mostly on this board -- chime in when I know something but mostly I just listen cause it seems you fellas know an awful lot about hunting.

I had the pleasure of teaching my son to shoot (Chipmunk 22 when he was 4) He'd shoot all day till his fingers were blistered from cocking the gun. He worked his way up to a .308 and he's pretty scary with it. Anybody thinks a .308 is undergunned in North America -- well I have an opinion about that.

When my son was 16 I took him on our first elk hunt in Routt County Colorado. We're hooked. He got a great 5X5 (ok it was a raghorn but we felt 10ft. tall) with a fantastic shot on the last day of the season. I stood back and had more pleasure watching him than if I had tried to shoot. Since then we've killed 6 Elk between us and he is 20 now.

We don't live in the "country" and it is a pain in the ass to find somewhere to hunt or shoot near where we live (Texas) as most land is private. Nevertheless we reload and shoot a thousand rounds or so in a year with a hunt or two each winter. Slim hunting pickings but right now he's in College and I work some unholy hours. We tried whitetail hunting here but the generally accepted practice is to shoot them off of bait and neither one of us got one speck of enjoyment out of it. Couple of times we've had access to enough land to do some still hunting and stalking and that my friends is fun.

While I've made many very close shots -- counted coup on both fox, deer, and squirrel (touched em) I enjoy the long shot. I realize in some folks mind that turns the hunter into a shooter but I don't see the distinction. A clean shot from a distance in a hunting situation is a thing of beauty to me so I mix some of that with some of the closer variety. There have been plenty of times I've ranged a critter and when I set up the shot it just doesn't feel right -- I might be too excited or can't get braced just right so I don't shoot -- doesn't bother me a bit. I figure if you pull the trigger it ought to fall over dead.

For work I am a veterinary cardiovascular surgeon (that's a mouthful) so when it comes to anatomy or the particulars of animal parts and pieces I maintain some expertise.

Enjoyed it -- hope I can squeeze in many more hunts.

Interesting topic and interesting folks, I've enjoyed it!

Well, guess I better throw my words down too for introductions sake!

Born in 1974 in Ohio, just across the river from my home in West Virginia.  Aint too young, aint too old neither, guess Tas and dakotasin are about the closest in age to me.  Grew up in Point Pleasant, WV, actually about 10 miles south on my family's farm where I learned to hunt, fish and live from my old man and his brothers.  Graduated HS in 1992, joined the US Army where I spent 8 years as a Special Forces Weapons Specialist, Infantryman, Indirect fire infantryman.  Pansy ass brass and change towards a politically correct and crippling fighting force made me leave.  Went to West Virginia University and graduated with a Bachelor's in Biology.  Worked in different government settings trying to protect the things I like to hunt and fish to include, West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.  Plan to go back to school and get a masters in wildlife management or something similar, where and when is unknown.  Got a girlfriend that I love and has put up with me for 4 years, the m-word may be in the near future????

Hunting, shooting, reloading are my biggest hobbies.  I've hunted deer, wild boar, turkey, and all sorts of small game and upland birds back here in the east.  I hunt with everything - bow(compound, recurve and longbow), rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader (percussion only).

Would really like to get into some outta state hunting, especially out west where there's true big game hunting.

As far as guns go, in the way of rifles I have a 22 Marlin 39A lever action, a 22-250 Remington 700 VLS bull barrel varminter, topped with a Leupold 6-20 X Vari-X III, a 257 Roberts Ruger 77 that I absolutely love for most of my hunting topped with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 on top, a Win. Model 70 XTR 30-06 with a Burris 3-9X, a chinese SKS which really just collects dust in my gun cabinet as I don't shoot it but was a gift from the old man, a 7 mm STW in Win. Model 70 with a Weaver grand slam scope for it, a 7 RUM in Remington 700 Sendero Stainless Fluted with Sightron SII 6-24X, a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 270 Winchester, I also have a few shotguns Remington 870 and 11-87 as well as some singles and old pumps.  Also got a few handguns - 22, 44 and 9 Luger.

Really enjoy this forum more than any other that I've found.  Good company good advice and good times.

GEEZE, I just noticed this and it's been here since waaaaaaaay back. Well, here goes, I was born in western Pa, in New Eagle in 1951 and grew up in Bentleyville. How do you like them apples saddlesore? I graduated highschool in 1969, after a not to glamorous education. About the best thing I did in school was play baseball. As a kid, I was always interested in guns and hunting. I bagged my first deer when I was 6 with a snare that I saw plans for in a hunting magazine and copied. I got my ass beat for a month after that, and settled down some after that. I bought my first rifle when I was 12 from a K-Mart store. It was a 1903-A3 and I paid $69 for it with my fathers signature of course. After highschool I joined the US Army and became a Cavalry Trooper, in tanks. After that I got a job in a coal mine and was sort of happy, but I joined the Army after 7 years to become a helocopter pilot. That just didn't pan out. Do you know that they have a rule that you have to be able to hear the chopper running? Well I couldn't, and they let me go, but not before I had a second trip through Basic Training. I went back to the mine until I got laid off in '86 and went to gunsmith school. I had been working on guns for a long time before that, but, I got a diploma so the world wouldn't think I'm a bullshit artist. I applied for and got a job in Va Beach, working for the Navy (not my favorite institution, I bleed olive drab) and have been here since 1989 fixing guns for them. That being said, I have been married since 1975 to the same woman and have one grown son who moved out a few years ago, but came back home two years ago and won't leave. I think I am going to break his plate so he'll move out. I am a gun collector of sorts, and over the years, have amassed a rather large collection of guns that the insurance companies don't want any part of. I also own a Basenji, the "barkless" dog of the Congo. All that said, I didn't get a chance to do much of anything this hunting season except kill a few doves. I am a steel silhouette shooter, small bore and high power rifles in both. I also shoot IPSC, trap, skeet, sporting clays and a bunch of other stuff like that too numerous to mention. In the last 10 years, I haven't bought a gun that I need, I just buy them because I don't have that kind. I hopes this covers things ok..........Kingpin

Hey folks...
Missed this when I started on BSB, so here goes...

I'm a Texas native, born in '54 in Victoria. Grew up in Corpus Christi and after three years in the Army landed in Harlingen.

I'm a pilot and spent a few years back in Corpus Christi flying pipeline patrol over most of the big buck country of South Texas. Ended up living 17 years in Houston while flying for a pipeline company based there. The whole time I was there I spent every single, free minute somewhere in South Texas on a deer lease.

In 1995, said to hell with it... bought my deer lease and moved to Karnes County which is SSE of San Antonio. I also switched jobs, now flying for Southwest Airlines. They don't give a rip about where you live as long as you aren't late for your flight. I fly for SWA out of Houston and commute to and from work in my airplane.

In 1999 and after my last daughter graduated from High School, we moved to Cuero which is a 44 mile drive from the ranch. I also sold 526 of the 641 acres I owned... that was a mistake but at the time it seemed like a good idea. I kept 115 acres that lie along the San Antonio River and Hondo Creek.

I'm just returning to rifle hunting after some shoulder problems have pretty much ended my bowhunting. I have been hunting with a '68 Wing Thunderbird recurve. Rifles.. I'm a lever-action guy and favor the Marlin's. Right now I'm hard pressed to choose between my 336-A or 444P. The 444P was bought for my grandson #2 as it was manufactured the year he was born but I like it so much I think I will keep it if I can find another NIB 444P. I also have a 336D, that's a special run Guide Gun in .35 Remington that was manufactured in 2000. It's destined for Grandson #1. I've got more guns but these are the ones that get the workout.

Reloading is another pastime of mine. I'm one of those fellows that shoots so he can reload! Even though I've been primarily a bowhunter, I've reloaded for about 35 years. I've shot rifles and handguns all these years but still prefered my bow for hunting.

As a newcomer to the camp fire I'll just say I am what some of you would call "one of the old farts" here.
Born in Iowa in 1943 I moved to Arizona in 1950. Been here ever sense.
Grad of Phoenix College and Arizona State University.
Work in Aerospace for 37 years as an Engineering Designer.

Hobbies: I build custom re-creations of 'Kentucky Rifles', Shoot almost anything I can hold, own more guns than "a sane person would ever need" (from an origional 1842 Springfield to a Weatherby), Reload and Cast my own bullets. I've been shooting Black Powder guns,(both Precussion and Flintlock) for over 30 years and rate them as the most enjoyable of all firearms to shoot.

I enjoy all forms of auto racing and drive a GMC 4X4 and a Miata. (My BMW Motorcycle tried to kill me 2 weeks ago so I am giving up riding after 38 years).

I don't shoot competition because of my eyesight and because too many people take it so seriously that it's not fun for me anymore.

This sounds like an interesting Forum and I am sure you will be hearing from me from time to time.
Just Jim

Keep your eyes peeled

Ok, here we go. Born in NW Missouri, my dad was a conservation agent for the state. After only a few years, dad went t o work for Gulf Oil/ Ag div. and we moved to Aledo, Il. and then across the river to Burlington, IA.

From there to Mexico, Mo. After H.S. graduation, (1980) and a failed or preempted trip to MU, I married and moved to Texas, the land of the free. I worked for a major musical intrument retailer/distributor for five yrs, divorced and headed for the Permian Basin.Moved back to the D/FW area and went to work for Boeing, Vought, Nokia and Transnorm. Though I might add, not concurrently.

Did a lot of traveling, millwrighting, instructing and so on for Transnorm. I developed happy feet and felt the need to do something different. I freelanced and moved back to Mizzou on a temp basis for Spartan Light Metals and ended up staying.

Have worked for Quaker Oats (Pepsi), Textron-Automotive Div. and now the State of Mo. in the Dist. 5 Signal Div.

All of the most recent positions have had me performing as a Maintenance Tech. electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic. The job ends the 31st of the month and it is back to job searching again.

Been shooting for a very long time and enjoy silhouette, all clays, smallbore, the Bianchi Cup is held every year about 25 mi. from me and I enjoy taking in the sights there. Hunting is of course at the top of my list. I enjoy wild game at the dinner table.

I am primarily an admirer of rifles and shotguns, though there are a few revolvers and pistols I enjoy. I do a bit of gunsmithing, limiting myself to repairs, replacements and some stock work. I still play and enjoy music of many styles, learning as much as I can as often as possible, reading and used to restore and race Mustangs.

Nothing particularly outstanding. Just an ordinary average guy with a lust for life.

Hmmm.

Born in 1959 in midtown Manhattan to an uppity Hi Line Norveegun, then she divorced dat vun and moved to Minot where she met this fighter pilot, okay?

So we Air Forced around the country, winding up at Malmstrom and finally at Kalispell AFS in the Flathead. Graduated Flathead High, then MSU, working on the railroad in the summers in Alaska. So I couldn't help being a sporting sort.

Had no debt out of school (thank you Alaska Railroad Overtime) so I hit the ski bum circuit, working commercial construction, then sewing patrol vests, then working on skis, then going on a mud-season trip, then back to construction. In retrospect, shoulda gotten married somewhere in there, let some good ones get away. And they call me and let me know that once in awhile  . So do their husbands!

Arthur Itis eventually got my hands to the point where I knew I wouldn't be able to do construction forever, and I'd been writing ski mag articles for quite a bit more than beer money. About that time Clinton got elected, I discovered "environmentalism" the hard way in the Steamboat Springs area at the same time, so I landed a job in Pueblo writing for People for the West, a multiple-use group. Did that for three years, it was a lot of fun but more crisis-driven than my blood pressure could take.

Moved home to Montana, I get by freelancing on natural resource issues and civil liberties, but it's sparse for two reasons. All the money in the environmental game goes to people who will lie for money. And if you want to be a reporter, you can't think for yourself...but are supposed to listen to people who are lying to you and then quote them correctly.

What the heck, I haven't starved yet. Keeps me reasonably svelte, in fact.

I have way more guns than I need and far fewer than I want.

Up hills slow, down hills fast, tonnage first and safety last

Well, Guess I fall into the certifiable "OLD FART" category, too. Born 1945 in Kelowna, British Columbia, moved to a small town in the Shuswap soon after and basically grew up within 20 miles of that town. Graduated from High school in 1963, and tossed around for about 3-4 years before deciding to become a tradesman. Graduated College as a Automotive repair technician in 1972. In the meantime, also got married and started raising a family [three girls, one boy] Went through a divorce after 20 years with that gal. Worked in several locations in B.C. and Alberta between 1974 and 1986. Remarried in 1992 to a real sweetheart, who values loyalty. She and I have a son who is just over 2 years old...he's the apple of my eye! I have been teaching at a local Community College for 14 years now. Always loved guns, had my first at age 8 and never looked back. I'm a pretty laid back guy, who tries to see the best in others, and I love spending time with friends in the great outdoors. I have strong religious convictions, and am an active member of my congregation. Hope to retire very soon, then I'll have yet more time for the "important" things! LOL Regards, Eagleye

Hey Orion,

When were you in the Permian basin? Just wondering, I lived in Odessa from 1985 until 1992.
